A long layover can easily ruin any itinerary. You sit in the terminal while the city stays behind thick glass. Airlines have turned this time into a separate journey. Some offer a free hotel and transfer, others provide a discount on accommodation or city perks.

Carrier policies vary widely. Some give you a room only for a very long wait, others offer discounts on four- and five-star properties, and Ethiopian Airlines adds a free transit visa for connections between 8 and 24 hours (as of 09/2026, official website). We checked seven programs on official airline websites in September 2026.

1. Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines offers two separate benefits, and passengers often confuse them. The Stopover in Istanbul program gives a free room at a partner hotel if the connection is longer than 24 hours, while Touristanbul opens up a free city tour for layovers of several hours.

For Touristanbul, you don't need to book anything. You simply go to the Touristanbul desk at the airport and pick a route that fits your time. Transfer and lunch are included.

Hotel accommodation is confirmed in advance, after you buy the ticket. You send the carrier your name, booking reference, and flight details. Without this request, no room will be issued.

2. Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways turns a Doha layover into a full mini-vacation. The Qatar Stopover package offers stays at four- and five-star hotels at reduced rates, and the stop can be extended over several days.

You book the package after buying your ticket. You choose a hotel on the website, enter your flight details, and the system recalculates the accommodation cost automatically. The program also includes discounts on select tours, such as a trip to a Bedouin settlement or a tour of the eastern souq.

• Who it's for: travelers ready to turn a layover into a short break in Doha.
• The catch: the package only works for stops of at least 12 hours, on a short connection you don't qualify for a hotel.

3. Etihad

Etihad bets on Abu Dhabi and free accommodation. The program has several packages: one covers a night at a hotel near the airport, another is designed for two nights with 24-hour check-in and internet, and a third offers discounts on four- and five-star hotels plus free breakfasts. You book the room in advance, together with your ticket. Before finalizing, make sure your chosen hotel has availability, otherwise the package won't be confirmed. For layovers shorter than 24 hours, no free room is offered.

4. Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines covers almost the entire layover in Addis Ababa. The carrier provides a free room, meals, transfer, and transit visa if both flights are on one ticket and the total layover time is between 8 and 24 hours (as of 09/2026, free hotel terms).

You don't need to book the hotel in advance. Vouchers for all services are issued at flight check-in. If they forget about them at the airport, the transit desk helps on the spot.

5. Iberia

Iberia turns a connection in Madrid into the Hola Madrid program. A layover in the Spanish capital becomes a stopover for several days, both on the outbound and return flights.

Iberia's perks add up to a whole package. You get free public transport for the first days, discounts on a local SIM card and car rental, a tour of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, cooking classes, and tickets to the city's museums.

EU citizens don't need a Schengen visa for the trip. Citizens of third countries without a valid Schengen visa won't be able to participate in the program.

6. TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal turns a layover in Lisbon or Porto into its own part of the trip. The stopover is added for free, can last up to ten days, and domestic flights get a 25% discount (as of 09/2026, official website).

You arrange the stopover when booking your ticket. You choose the option to add a layover and specify the city and length of stay. After registering, bonuses unlock: Lisboa Card or Porto Card at a special price, discounts at restaurants, museums, and on private tours.

7. Emirates

Emirates extends connections in Dubai through its Dubai Connect program. When you have a long wait for your next flight, the carrier covers a hotel room, meals, and transfers between the airport and the hotel.

You need to add the accommodation and transfer when booking online, before departure. The condition is strict: the connection time must be the shortest among all available options. If a shorter layover exists for your route, the program does not apply.
