Vacation with a baby in Europe: 10 destinations and the best season

A trip with a toddler goes smoothly when the destination is chosen with the child in mind. You need a short flight, stable weather, a playground near your accommodation, and shallow water at the shore.

On Tenerife the air stays around 20 °C even in January (as of 09/2026, Tenerife tourism office), and at Lake Constance you can swim in warm water right at the shore. The difference between these destinations is significant, and it determines how your vacation goes.

We have put together ten destinations in Europe that pass the test for climate, travel, and infrastructure. For each place you will find the best season, how to get there, and activities for a toddler on site. We checked numbers and opening hours against official sources.

What to check before traveling with a toddler

💡 In short:

  • Choose a destination based on three criteria: travel time under five hours, stable weather, a playground and a store near your accommodation.
  • Plan your vacation for the shoulder season: May, June, late September, and October are quieter and cheaper.
  • Bring a stroller with large wheels and a baby carrier as a backup.

With a toddler, a vacation does not fall apart on excursions, it falls apart on small things. The child gets tired in line, cannot sleep in a stuffy room, wakes up from street noise. So the first thing you check is the journey. A direct flight or a train without transfers saves you half a day and half your nerves.

The second criterion is climate. You need stable temperatures without extreme heat, shade on the beach, and warm water. In summer in southern Europe, a toddler struggles from eleven in the morning to four in the afternoon, and in winter the Canary Islands and Madeira win out. In the mountains of Austria and Germany, summer is more comfortable than on the coast.

The third criterion is infrastructure. Check in advance whether the hotel has an elevator, whether you can bring a stroller on the bus, and how far the pharmacy and the store with baby food are. These three points matter more than the stars on the sign and the view from the window.

The age from one to three is the best time for such a trip. The toddler experiences everything for the first time, and tickets and accommodation in the shoulder season cost noticeably less. Below are ten destinations with descriptions, photos, and practical details for each.

1. Tenerife (Spain)

Tenerife works all year round. In winter the air stays around 20 °C (as of 09/2026, official Tenerife tourism website), rain is rare, and the southern coast stays sunny almost always. Locals are relaxed around children, and it shows in cafes, buses, and stores.

For a toddler, three things matter here. The first is sandy beaches with a gentle entry into the water. The second is children's areas in water parks. The third is picnic areas with playground structures in the mountains, where you have lunch while the child goes down the slide.

How to structure your days with a toddler:

The south of the island is a separate climate zone. From the resorts of Costa Adeje to Los Cristianos, rain falls only a few days a year, so you can plan beach days without watching the forecast. The north is greener and cooler, with more clouds, but old towns with narrow streets are close by.

During the day it works well to keep a simple rhythm. In the morning you go to the beach, swim and play in the sand until noon, then return to the hotel for a nap. After four o'clock you go out again to the promenade or the playground, and in the evening you have dinner by the water. This schedule saves both the child and you.

Water parks are built with toddlers in mind. Children's areas have small slides and shaded loungers, and the water depth lets the child stand on their own. It is better to buy tickets in advance; in season, entry without a reservation means time spent in line.

  • Beaches and playgrounds: in the Alcalá area you walk along the sea from one beach to another, with playgrounds between them.

  • Promenades: the entire waterfront line is walkable with a stroller, the surface is even.

  • Mountains: some routes are stroller-friendly, and picnic areas have space to play.

  • How to get there: direct flight, about four and a half hours.

  • Best season: winter, spring, and autumn; in summer the south is hot and crowded.

  • The catch: from midday the sun is harsh, and there is little shade on the beach. You need sunscreen with a high SPF and an umbrella every day.

  • Accommodation: hotels on Tenerife on Trip.com.

2. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis (Austria)

The Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region in Tyrol is built entirely around families. In summer you take the cable car up and move from one playground to another. There are almost no ordinary swings here. Instead, there are water stations, wooden mazes, and rope courses. Strollers are allowed in the cable car, and you do not need to fold them.

At the alpine huts, children are given pencils and paper to pass the time until lunch. The trails between stations are even, and you can cover most of them with a stroller. If your child is under one, plan the day with breaks.

Four places worth going up for:

  • Erlebnispark Hög: water for swimming, a lawn for running around, cows behind a fence, and stations with milk cans (as of 09/2026, region website).

  • Murmliwasser: a water carousel and rafts, and the starting point of the stroller-friendly "Piratenweg" route.

  • Sommer-Funpark Fiss: a sandbox with ride-on cars, a carousel, and a petting zoo.

  • Playground at Wolfsee: water games, low swings, and climbing structures for toddlers.

From age three, children can try kids' trails and toboggan runs, but only with an adult nearby. In winter the region turns into a large ski school for beginners.

  • How to get there: by car, the road goes through mountain passes.

  • Best season: from mid-June to mid-October; in winter people come for the snow.

  • The catch: altitude. Going up to two thousand meters with a one-year-old requires a pause for acclimatization and attention to how the child feels.

  • Accommodation: hotels in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis on Trip.com.

3. Allgäu (Germany)

In the Allgäu, a toddler gets up close to animals for the first time. On farms, kids feed goats, rabbits, and cows, and two-year-olds already help out in the barn. A farm stay is calmer than a hotel: the playground is right in the yard, the kitchen is nearby, and you don't have to haul a stroller up and down stairs.

Families can stay at Biobauernhof Stöger with a view of Neuschwanstein Castle, Ferienhof Ammann, and Ferienhof Weber Nieratz. If you prefer a hotel, check out Familotel Bavaria Pfronten: it has a playroom for toddlers and a warm-water pool. Breakfast is included in the rate at hotels like this.

There's also a plan for rainy days in the Allgäu:

  • Indoor-Spielplatz Allgäulino: indoor slides and trampolines.

  • Scheidegger Wasserfälle: waterfalls with a playground and a fairy-tale forest.

  • Skywalk Allgäu: a petting zoo and forest trails with activities.

  • Walderlebniszentrum Ziegelwies: circular trails suitable for strollers, free entry.

  • Buron Kinderpark: trampolines, tractors, and a water play area.

  • Kurpark Oberstaufen: a large free playground in the town center.

  • Getting there: by car or by train if your accommodation is near a station.

  • Best season: May through September; in winter, people go sledding in the mountains.

  • The catch: without a car, getting to the farms and waterfalls takes a long time, and buses run infrequently.

  • Accommodation: hotels in the Allgäu on Trip.com.

4. Lake Constance (Germany, Austria and Switzerland)

Lake Constance lies on the border of three countries, so you are choosing not only a beach, but also a country. In late September and October, apples and grapes are harvested on the German shore. The panoramic path from the am Töbele parking lot is stroller-friendly (open on map).

Lake Constance in autumn, vineyards on the slope

A farm vacation here is simple. Ferienhof Schmid in Lindau keeps goats, donkeys and rabbits, and the garden has several play structures. The owners' children live on the same farm, so your little one always has company. On the Austrian side, Bio-Bauernhof Heidegger operates, and from there you can reach swimming spots in half an hour.

Swimming is convenient: the water near the shore is shallow, the promenades are flat, and playgrounds sit right next to them. The quiet town of Uhldingen-Mühlhofen suits slow days. You can rent a bike with a child seat in any lakeside town.

What to see with a toddler:

  • Affenberg Salem: about 200 Barbary macaques live on 20 hectares of forest (as of 09/2026, affenberg-salem.de).

  • Auto & Traktor Museum: your child gets a ride-on car and drives through the halls on their own.

  • Haustierhof Reutemühle: playgrounds and animal feeding.

  • Wildpark Sonnenhalde: free entry, visitors are allowed to feed the animals.

  • Maestrani's Chocolarium: a chocolate factory with interactive stations.

  • Spielhäusle in Kressbronn and Lufti Kinderspielewelt: indoor playgrounds for rainy days.

  • Best season: April, May, June, September and October.

  • The catch: in July and August the promenades and lakeside parking lots are crowded, and when it rains there are almost no outdoor options.

  • Where to stay: hotels on Lake Constance on Trip.com.

5. East Frisia (Germany)

The North Sea gives your toddler something you will not find in the south: the Wadden Sea. At low tide the water recedes and leaves sand, puddles and shells, and at high tide playgrounds operate near the shore. No flight is needed, and for parents that is the main argument.

Norddeich and Neuharlingersiel make good bases. In Norddeich, right next to the beach, there is a seal station with interactive exhibits and a free indoor playhouse with a separate toddler area. In Neuharlingersiel, a water playground and trampolines await right behind it. Bensersiel suits camping, with a site right by the beach.

The Wadden Sea is a national park, and walks across the exposed seabed are usually done with a guide. For a toddler, a walk near the shore is enough. At low tide sandbanks appear, puddles hold shells and small crabs, and your child stays busy digging for hours. Bring rubber boots for sure, walking barefoot on the sticky ground is hard.

Evenings on the coast are cool. The North Sea wind is noticeable even in July, so bring a jacket on every walk. On the plus side, the cool air is easier to handle than the stuffiness of the south, and your toddler falls asleep faster.

The season here is short and coincides with school holidays in Germany. If you can choose your dates, come in late May or early September: playgrounds are empty and accommodation costs less.

Rainy-day plan:

  • Haustierpark Werdum and Birgits Tiergarten in Rechtsupweg: you can feed the animals.

  • Klabautermann in Esens and Bennis Abenteuerland in Bensersiel: indoor playgrounds where the slides sit right in the sand.

  • Nordseetherme in Bensersiel: a pool with a pirate ship for toddlers.

  • Riding farms: Ferienhof Welsch and Reit- und Ferienhof Maack welcome families with children.

  • Getting there: by car, or by train to Norddeich, which is also convenient.

  • Best season: April through September.

  • The catch: the weather is changeable even in summer, and the sea wind is always felt on the beach.

  • Where to stay: hotels in East Frisia on Trip.com.

6. Black Forest (Germany)

The Black Forest surprises with its mix of forest and city. In the morning you walk to a waterfall, at noon you have lunch in central Freiburg, in the evening you return to the farm. The Triberg waterfalls are considered among the highest in Germany, and the path to them is stroller-friendly.

Animals are on display here without a zoo. At Wolf- und Bärenpark, a convenient stroller path loops around, and bears and wolves live in large enclosures. The free Erlebnisbauernhof in Schramberg and Wildgehege St. Blasien allow animal feeding, so a supply of carrots will come in handy.

The Zauberwaldpfad Bernau is a good walk. Wooden figures stand along the loop, a water wheel turns, and a stream flows nearby. You can do almost the entire loop with a stroller, and your child stays busy the whole way looking for new figures.

In the Black Forest it is easy to plan a day without a car. Trains run from Freiburg to small towns, and from the station you walk to the trail or take a bus. For distant waterfalls and parks, a car is still more convenient: scheduled buses in the mountains run infrequently.

The weather in the mountains changes quickly. The sun shines in the morning, clouds roll in by lunch, and after rain the trail gets slippery. Bring a rain jacket, spare socks and shoes with tread, and a wet day will not ruin your walk.

The food here is simple and kid-friendly. Village cafes serve potatoes, soups and cherry pie, portions are large, and almost every dining room has a high chair.

If it rains, keep FUNDORENA in Feldberg and Kinder Galaxie in Freiburg in reserve. Both parks operate indoors.

  • Getting there: by car or by train to Freiburg.

  • Best season: April through September.

  • The catch: the valleys are damp and cool even in summer, so bring jackets and waterproof shoes.

  • Where to stay: hotels in the Black Forest on Trip.com.

7. Gran Canaria (Spain)

Gran Canaria works on the same logic as Tenerife, but with a different landscape. The Maspalomas dunes turn into a giant sandbox, and in winter the air stays around twenty degrees. For a first winter escape with a toddler, this is one of the easiest options.

Beaches are chosen based on waves. Near Puerto Rico, Playa de Amadores bay is sheltered from waves, and the water entry is gradual. In Las Palmas, the long Playa de las Canteras promenade is good for stroller walks and watching surfers. In the south, the sun sets early, so evening swims are short.

Activities start at age two. Angry Birds Activity Park is open-air, and Aqualand Maspalomas has two children's zones. There is plenty of nature too: in the Barranco de los Cernícalos gorge, you walk along a stream with a waterfall and carry your child in a sling.

About animals on the island:

  • Poema del Mar: an aquarium in Las Palmas.

  • Cocodrilo Park: an animal rescue center.

  • Botanical garden in Arucas: peacocks roam freely, strollers fit on the paths.

  • Getting there: by plane, about four and a half hours.

  • Best season: winter, spring, and fall.

  • The catch: the south of the island is densely built up with hotels, so you'll need to find calm bays in advance.

  • Accommodation: hotels in Gran Canaria on Trip.com.

8. Fuerteventura (Spain)

Fuerteventura is an island of long beaches and dunes, with enough sand for the whole vacation. In summer it is very windy here, so families more often choose Caleta de Fuste. In winter the wind calms down, the water stays cool, but swimming is possible.

Swimming with a toddler is convenient in El Cotillo. The main beach and neighboring La Concha are protected from waves by a reef, and the water entry is gentle (open on map). There is almost no shade on the island, so you take an umbrella and sunscreen with you every day.

If you want some variety:

  • Popcorn-Strand at Playa El Majanicho: a beach with white pebbles.

  • Caves in Ajuy: the drive takes about half an hour and is not suitable for a stroller, so carry your child in a sling.

  • Diverland Park in Corralejo: a playground on the roof of a shopping center.

  • Watching kitesurfers: the dunes of Corralejo, La Pared and Sotavento beach.

  • Whale skeletons: located in Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal and other towns.

  • Puertito de los Molinos: ducks, birds and a beautiful sunset.

Oasis Wild Life zoo also welcomes families. Beaches with a playground nearby are in Caleta de Fuste and Gran Tarajal, where you can swim and play in one spot.

  • How to get there: by plane, about four and a half hours.

  • Best season: November to March.

  • The catch: summer wind kicks up sand, and an umbrella does not always help.

  • Accommodation: hotels in Fuerteventura on Trip.com.

9. Novi Vinodolski (Croatia)

Croatia works well for a road trip without flying. Novi Vinodolski sits on the Adriatic coast. You stroll with a stroller along the promenade, yachts sway in the marina nearby, and stores sell familiar baby products.

The beaches here are pebbly and rocky, with no sand. For a toddler this is more of a plus: after swimming there is no sticky sand on them, and stones make excellent towers.

Swimming with a toddler is more convenient in coves where the bottom is covered with pebbles and there are no waves. The water entry is rocky, so water shoes are needed for both your child and you. An inflatable ring is not much help here, but armbands and a life vest will come in handy.

The promenade runs along the marina and further to the beaches. You can push the stroller along it to the playground, from where you can see boats and fishermen. In the evening the center gets lively, so with a toddler go for a walk before dinner.

From the surrounding area, the island of Krk stands out. A bridge connects it to the mainland, so you can drive there without a ferry. It has sandy sections, which is rare for Croatia, and a town with a fortress on a hill.

From June to mid-September the coast is crowded and more expensive. In the off-season the water is cooler, but the promenade is empty and prices are lower.

Istria is a good option for day trips. With an older child you can drive to Dinopark Funtana, a dinosaur park, about two hours away. If you are traveling with a dog, there is a separate beach for animals nearby.

  • How to get there: by car.

  • Best season: April, early May, late September and October.

  • The catch: rocky water entry and high season, when the promenades get crowded.

  • Accommodation: hotels in Novi Vinodolski on Trip.com.

10. Madeira (Portugal)

Madeira suits those who are ready to walk a lot. The island is green and humid, so pack rain jackets and waterproof sneakers. On the other hand, the temperature stays steady all year round, and in winter you can walk along the coast without a jacket.

Panorama of Funchal, Madeira, with mountains and ocean© H. Zell · CC BY-SAPhoto: H. Zell, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

The main routes run along levadas, which are water channels. The short route PR 9.1 "Caminho para Todos" near Queimadas is doable with a stroller, about two kilometers long, taking about forty-five minutes (as of 09/2026, visitmadeira.com). At the end a park with geese and ducks awaits you.

Many viewpoints are reached by cable car, and the cabin ride delights toddlers no less than the observation deck. For the city, set aside a day for Funchal: the Mercado dos Lavradores market with exotic fruits and cruise ships in the port.

Deciding where to stay is best based on the sides of the island. The south is warmer and drier, where Funchal and most hotels are located. The north is rainier and greener, but closer to the levadas and cliffs. For a first trip with a toddler choose the south, and leave longer routes for a separate day.

The roads on the island are narrow and winding. If your child gets carsick, plan short drives and do not combine two routes in one day. On hairpin turns, stops and a snack help.

In the evening it is pleasant to walk along the Funchal waterfront by the port and watch the cruise ships. With a toddler, go there after the afternoon nap and walk until sunset.

  • How to get there: by plane, about four hours.

  • Best season: year-round, but rain is more frequent in autumn and winter.

  • The catch: rain and humidity, and some routes are inaccessible without a sling.

  • Accommodation: hotels in Madeira on Trip.com.

More destinations for a vacation with a toddler

The ten destinations above are not the whole list. Below are four places that suit families with a toddler if you are ready for a longer journey or changeable weather.

  • Mallorca: about a two-hour flight, sandy coves, water parks with children's areas, caves and stroller-friendly routes.

  • Italy: family hotels with a children's menu and pool, short flights and mild weather in spring.

  • Denmark: long sandy beaches, LEGOLAND and the Lalandia water park in Billund. Weather is not guaranteed, but wind usually does not bother a toddler.

  • Sweden: camping and nature, plenty of space to play and almost no queues.

One rule applies to all four destinations. The shorter the journey, the easier the first day with a toddler. The second day you already plan around their sleep and feeding.

Films about traveling with a toddler

If you need motivation before a trip, watch three films about families who went far away with small children.

  • "Auf dem Weg": Salima and Timo travel through Sri Lanka with their toddler daughter, and a second daughter is born in Bali.

  • "Zwei Familien auf Weltreise": Benni, Sandy and their son, as well as Maria and Thor with four children, show what a round-the-world trip with kids looks like.

  • "Nordwärts": Maria and Thor hike through Norway with four children and a tent.

All three stories have one thing in common. The pace of the trip is dictated by the child, not the adults' schedule. You can start with a short route for a few days and see how your toddler handles the journey.

Watching such films is convenient even before booking. They honestly show family life on the road: laundry, feeding, short drives and early wake-ups. After watching, it is easier to understand how long packing will take and how to structure the day with a child.

For a first family trip, one week and one region is enough. Choose a base near the sea or forest and do not move every day. This way your toddler gets used to the place, and you get to see more than just the view from the car window.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

At what age can you take a child on a trip like this?

There are almost no age restrictions, but the first long trip is usually planned after the first six months, when the child can handle the journey comfortably. For the Canary Islands in winter, people go with a one-year-old; for the Alps, it is better to wait until after the first year, since the altitude requires a pause for acclimatization. Start with a short flight and warm weather without sharp temperature swings.

Where should you fly with a baby in winter when it is cold at home?

In winter, choose the Canary Islands. On Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the air stays around twenty degrees, rain is rare, and the southern coast remains sunny. Among island destinations, Madeira also works, but rain is more frequent there in fall and winter. Both options require a flight, so book a direct route.

Do you need a stroller on the trip, or is it easier to just take a baby carrier?

Take both. A stroller is a lifesaver on the promenades of Lake Constance, Madeira, and Novi Vinodolski, while a carrier comes in handy where stairs and rocky paths begin: in the Barranco de los Cernícalos gorge and in the caves at Ajuy. A carrier takes up little space, and you can always bring it with you.

How much does a trip with a baby to these destinations cost?

The cost depends on the season and the flight, so naming a single figure makes no sense. The shoulder season is cheaper than school holidays: April, early May, late September, and October. A farm stay in the Allgäu or East Frisia costs less than a hotel at a Canary Islands resort, and tickets for parks and cable cars are easier to buy in advance.

What should you pack in a first aid kit for a trip with a baby?

Bring fever medication, nasal drops for a runny nose, insect bite treatment, and high-SPF sunscreen. Add a supply of the usual formula or purées and a couple of familiar toys. In Croatia, Spain, and Portugal, dm stores and regular pharmacies are available, so restocking on the spot is easy.

In short: what to book

Each destination covers a different need. If you want a warm winter beach, choose Tenerife or Gran Canaria. If your baby is traveling far for the first time, start with Lake Constance or East Frisia. Mountain and playground lovers will enjoy Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, and for trips without a flight, choose the Allgäu, the Black Forest, or Novi Vinodolski.

Close three questions before the trip. Choose accommodation to fit your budget and dates, buy tickets for parks and cable cars in advance, and book a car if you plan to move around the region.
