AIIllustrative image: AI-generatedWhen is the best time to go to Paphos: monthly weather and sea season
Paphos works year-round, but the season decides almost everything. In July, finding shade on a terrace is harder than finding a free table, and in January some beach bars are closed. We've put together month-by-month weather, sea temperatures, and opening hours for the main attraction so you can pick your dates without surprises.
Opening hours for the Paphos Archaeological Park depend on the season (as of 09/2026, Cyprus FAQ). That means the time of year even affects how much you can fit into one day. We most often recommend May and October.

When to go to Paphos: the short answer
💡 In short:
- Beach season runs from June through October.
- For sightseeing and walks, March-May and September-November are more comfortable.
- December-February is the cheapest and quietest, but some seaside cafes are closed.
- In summer, the Archaeological Park stays open longer than in winter (as of 09/2026, verified on the official Cyprus tourism website).
Why Paphos is worth a trip year-round
Paphos lies in the southwest of Cyprus, right on the Mediterranean Sea. Winters are mild and summers are hot, so the resort never empties out in any month. The old town and ancient ruins sit right by the water, and a promenade with cafes and fishing boats runs along the harbor.

In December and January, temperatures stay around 17-19 °C, and the promenade is pleasant to walk along without the crowds. In summer, the water is warm, and a light breeze comes off the sea in the evening. You'll quickly see that Paphos is famous not only for its beaches but also for its archaeology.
Keep one thing in mind. In the off-season, some beachfront hotels close for renovations. Check their operating dates before booking. That way you won't show up to a closed pool.
Weather in Paphos by season and month
The climate here is typically Mediterranean: dry summers and wet winters. Almost all the rain falls from November through March. December gets the most rain, around 94 mm of precipitation (as of 09/2026, Weather Atlas).

The table shows long-term averages (as of 09/2026, Weather2Travel).

- May and June: warming up quickly, the sea enters a comfortable range;
- July and August: peak heat, air up to 32 °C, warmest water;
- September and October: the best balance of warmth and calm;
- November and December: still warm during the day, cool evenings, rain begins.
In summer the sea warms up to 28 °C, and swimming is comfortable from June through October (as of 09/2026, Weather Atlas).
Best time for your type of trip
What counts as the best time depends on your plans. Below are three scenarios that most often match what travelers expect.
For the beach: June-October
During these months you can swim almost every day (as of 09/2026, Weather Atlas). The peak heat falls in July and August, when daytime air reaches 32 °C. Bring sunscreen and head to the water in the morning or after 4:00 PM.
For history and sightseeing: March-May and September-November
During these months it's comfortable to walk around the ruins all day. Ticket lines are shorter, and tours move at a relaxed pace. Want to explore the Archaeological Park without crowds? Arrive at opening time, 8:30 AM.
For a quiet trip and savings: December-February
In winter Paphos becomes quiet. Accommodation prices are lower, and the promenade has few people. Walking is pleasant, but few will brave swimming: the water cools to around 17 °C. Some seasonal cafes and boat trips are closed.
What to see in Paphos and nearby
People come to Paphos primarily for the ancient open-air monuments. Here are three places that most affect your trip plan.

The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 (as of 09/2026, official Cyprus tourism website). It preserves Roman mosaics in the Houses of Dionysus, Theseus and Aion, palace ruins and an ancient theater. A visit takes 2-3 hours.

- Hours: 08:30-19:30 from April 16 to September 15, 08:30-17:00 the rest of the year. Closed on December 25, January 1 and Easter Sunday (as of 09/2026, Cyprus FAQ).
- Getting there: on foot from Paphos harbor, about 10 minutes along the promenade.
- The catch: in summer there is almost no shade over the ruins, so bring water and a hat.
Aphrodite's rock (Petra tou Romiou)
Aphrodite's Rock stands 25 km from Paphos, on the road to Limassol. According to legend, this is where the goddess emerged from the sea. The beach by the rock is pebbly, with a noticeable current, so it's better to swim in calm weather.
© Diego Delso · CC BY-SAPhoto: Diego Delso, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia Commons- How to get there: by car or bus along the B6 highway, about 30 minutes.
- Cost: entry is free, nearby parking is free.
- Who it's for: for those heading out at sunset who want a beautiful view without a ticket.
- The catch: there is almost no infrastructure, there is one cafe and it is packed in season.
Coral bay and Lara beach
A sandy cove, Coral Bay, lies 20 minutes from the center. It has sun loungers, cafes, and a gentle entry into the water. Lara Beach, by contrast, is a wild beach in a nature reserve, where people come for the sea turtles. Choose Coral Bay if you are traveling with children. Choose Lara Beach if you want quiet and are willing to drive along a dirt road.

How to plan your trip
Paphos is compact, and it is easy to get between the main points on foot or by bus. Here are a few practical tips.
- Book accommodation in advance for July, August, and September. This is high season, and good hotels are snapped up months ahead.
- Plan ruin visits for the morning. The heat intensifies during the day, and you tire faster.
- Bring water and a hat. The park grounds have little shade and almost no shops.
- Set aside one day for a trip along the coast. Aphrodite's Rock and Lara Beach are worth leaving the city for.
