When to go to Malaysia: seasons, islands and holidays
Malaysia can be visited year-round, but each region has its own dry season. Rain and closed islands depend not on the month, but on the coast.
If you are planning a single trip, pick the region that matches the season you need. If you are going for a long time, build your route so you can catch both monsoons. Below is a breakdown by coast, the best months for trekking, and holidays that shift plans.
The country has two monsoons: the southwest monsoon from late May to September and the northeast monsoon from November to March (METMalaysia).
Seasons in Malaysia: in short
💡 In short:
- West coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi): dry from December to February, rain comes during the southwest monsoon season.
- East coast (Tioman, Redang, Perhentian): open from March to October, best season June to August.
- Borneo and Mount Kinabalu: driest from February to April.
- Seasons and monsoons: 09/2026, according to METMalaysia weather service.
Region | Best months | Rainy season |
|---|---|---|
West coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi) | December to February | May to September |
East coast (Tioman, Redang, Perhentian) | June to August | November to March |
Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak, Mount Kinabalu) | February to April | November to January |
Below we will break down each region separately so you can match the months to your itinerary.
West coast: dry season in winter
In winter, the west coast is the driest part of the country. From December to February, Kuala Lumpur, George Town on Penang, and Langkawi have clear, warm weather. This is a convenient time for city sightseeing, trips to waterfalls, and beach time. Rain arrives here with the southwest monsoon, meaning from late May to September (according to the weather service). Downpours come more often, but in short bursts rather than whole days. If you want minimal rain, choose winter for the cities and the islands of Penang and Langkawi.
East coast: islands closed until March
From November to March, the northeast monsoon hits the east coast. It brings heavy downpours and rough seas. On Tioman, Redang, and the Perhentians, most hotels and ferries shut down during this time.

It is better to plan a trip to the islands from March to October. The best months for diving and snorkeling are June, July, and August, when the water is clear and the sea is calm. If you are flying in winter, move the beach portion of your trip to the west coast.
Borneo and Kinabalu: trekking season
On Borneo, the seasons differ from the peninsula. For climbing Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, the best window falls in February, March, and April. During these months there is the least rain, and views from the summit open up more often (MountKinabalu.com).

From May to July, the southwest monsoon adds to it. From May to November, typhoons occur in the region, and their edges reach Sabah. In Sarawak's national parks, avoid November and December, when downpours last for long stretches. In the Cameron Highlands on the peninsula, these months are also rainy. Bring trekking shoes and a raincoat in any month.
Chinese New Year: dates and celebrations
When planning your trip, keep holidays in mind. Chinese New Year begins on the new moon between January 21 and February 21 and lasts fifteen days. In 2026 it falls on February 17, and in 2027 on February 6 (public-holidays.com.my). Dragon and lion dances, fireworks, and street fairs take place in the Chinatowns of cities. It is a spectacular time, but hotels get more expensive and streets fill with people. If a quiet vacation matters to you, choose other dates. If you want to see the celebration, book accommodation in advance: a couple of weeks before the New Year, there are almost no rooms left.
Ramadan: when it falls
Ramadan occupies the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, so each year it shifts about eleven days earlier. In 2026, Ramadan falls in February and March (MyTrip Malaysia). A few years ago it landed in summer; now it has shifted to winter and spring.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Malaysia for the first time?
For a first trip, choose the west coast in winter. From December to February, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi are dry and warm, and attractions and beaches are accessible without restrictions. This way you can comfortably combine city and sea and avoid the closed season on the islands.
Which months are the worst for the east coast?
November, December, January, and February. During this time, the northeast monsoon brings downpours and rough seas, and most hotels and ferries close on Tioman, Redang, and the Perhentians.
Can you swim and dive year-round?
You can swim almost always, but diving depends on the season. On the east coast, the best water is from June to August. On the west coast, people dive in the dry season from December to February. Plan dives for a specific coast rather than a calendar month.
Is it worth going to Malaysia during Ramadan?
You can go; the country is open to tourists. Keep in mind that in conservative areas of the east coast, fasting is observed more strictly: do not eat, drink, or smoke outdoors during the day. On the other hand, evening food markets operate every day, and tourists are welcome there.
What should you do if your trip falls during the rainy season?
Rain in the tropics comes in short downpours, with sun in between. During the rainy season, plan morning excursions, bring a raincoat, and keep your plans flexible. If you are going to the islands, check in advance whether ferries and hotels are operating on your chosen dates.
In short: what to book
If you have winter and a first trip: choose Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi. If your goal is diving: plan June to August on the Perhentians, Redang, or Tioman. If you want to climb Kinabalu: choose February, March, or April.
