Ocho Rios grew out of a fishing village and became one of the island's main tourist centers. The town sits in a ring of mountains, with waterfalls running down from them to the sea. The main draw here is Dunn's River Falls (Dunn's River Falls), about 55 m high (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia).

Climbing the cascades takes less than an hour and is done as part of a guided tour. For a panoramic view of the town, people go up Murphy Hill, the highest point in the northern part of the island. Runaway Bay is a small town with one main street, along which a string of hotels, villas, and restaurants has grown up. The resort quickly became one of the island's planned recreation areas while keeping the feel of small-town life. On the central square stands a church built more than two hundred years ago.

Most people come here for the Green Grotto Caves. Runaway slaves hid in them, and pirates stored their loot there. The tour winds among stalactites and stalagmites, after which you can head back to the beach. Rain here tends to fall at night, so the days usually stay dry.

Spanish Town sits inland and was once the capital of Jamaica. There are no sea beaches here, but the architectural heritage of the Victorian and early colonial eras has survived. Notable landmarks include St. Catherine's Cathedral, the Rodney Memorial, an old dam, and Belvedere Estate.

Another reason to visit: river rafting on a bamboo raft, following the traditions of old masters. Rare species of amphibians, reptiles, and fish are found around the town. Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, is a big, noisy city. A quiet getaway in unspoiled nature is hard to arrange here, but there are plenty of historic sites. This was once the site of the pirate haven Port Royal, which sank underwater during an earthquake.

The ruins of the city lie on the seabed, and divers descend to them with a special permit. Artifacts have been brought up to the archaeological museum, and the island's history is presented at the Maritime Museum in the old fort.
