8 Races where a sports enthusiast competes without professional status

Ordinary amateurs swim across the Bosphorus.

On August 23, 2026, the swim will take place again in Istanbul: 6.5 km from Kanlıca to Kuruçeşme (swim program). Such events exist all over the world: the Boston Marathon, a swim in Taiwan, a cycling race in Colorado. Professional status is not required for most of them.

We've put together eight competitions that are realistic for amateurs to enter, and checked the dates, distances, and registration rules on the organizers' websites.

How amateur events work

💡 In short:

  • Eight events: open water, running, rowing, golf, cycling, and a sailing regatta.
  • For most events, registration is enough; Boston and the golf championship require qualification. The Boat Race is open only to students of Oxford and Cambridge.
  • Dates and entry requirements: 09/2026, verified on the organizers' websites, links to them in the table below.

Each event has its own format. Some are mass races with tens of thousands of participants, others involve a team of three skiers. The common thread: amateurs start without a professional license. Below you'll find the 2026 dates, distances, requirements, and price benchmarks. Keep your passport and medical certificate handy: those are requested most often.

1. Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim

Istanbul hosts this swim every year, and it is the only race in the world where a swimmer changes continents mid-course. The route runs from Kanlıca in Asia to Kuruçeşme in Europe, a 6.5 km distance with a favorable current (swim conditions). The average finish time is around two hours, and you will need a medical certificate.

Both amateurs and professionals take part. The organizers keep a separate quota for international entrants, and it fills up fast. You can only submit an application in the first minutes after registration opens. Registration opens on the website in advance, and you need to pay for your slot right after that. The application requires a passport scan, a medical certificate, and a letter from your coach with a copy of their certification.

  • How to get in: register on the official website, pay for your slot, and submit the required documents.
  • Preparation: many amateurs take a course at a swim school to build the endurance for two hours in the current.
  • Who it's for: confident swimmers who can hold their pace in open water.
  • The catch: the international quota is small, and slots are gone within minutes.

2. Boston Marathon: qualification and slots

The Boston Marathon has been held since 1897 and is the world's oldest annual marathon. The 2026 race took place on April 20, with about 30,000 runners starting from Hopkinton (official website). The course is the classic 42.2 km to downtown Boston.

Amateurs need to qualify. Men aged 18-34 must run 2 hours 55 minutes, women and non-binary runners 3 hours 25 minutes at a certified marathon (standards). Even meeting the standard doesn't guarantee a spot: applications exceed the quota, and organizers cut off by time. You submit your result in advance and send your application in September.

  • How to get in: run a qualifying marathon faster than the standard and apply on time.
  • Who it's for: experienced runners with a confirmed result at an official marathon.
  • The catch: without a qualifying time you won't get a slot, and training takes years.

3. The boat race on the Thames

Oxford and Cambridge have been settling scores on the water since 1829. The 2026 race took place on April 4, a 6.8 km course from Putney to Mortlake that crews complete in about 20 minutes (official website).

You can watch the race for free from the banks of the Thames, where about 250,000 fans gather (The Boat Race data). Only students of these two universities can compete. But this is where amateurs who later won medals at international events got their start. In 1980, actor Hugh Laurie, the future Dr. House, sat in the Cambridge boat.

  • How to get in: only for Oxford and Cambridge students through university clubs.
  • How to watch: free along the course, good viewing spots near Hammersmith and Putney bridges.
  • Who it's for: spectators and rowing fans; an amateur can't compete here.
  • The catch: you can't race as an outsider, access is for students only.

4. Les 3 Vallées Enduro

The competition has been held at the Les 3 Vallées ski resort in the French Alps for over 20 years (official website). It's a one-day festival for teams of three.

The program includes freeride, downhill, biathlon, big air, derby, slalom, rescue operations, a mountaineering relay, and an overall timed race. Teams are entered into one of three categories: professionals, family, amateurs. Early online booking makes entry cheaper, so put your team together in advance: you need exactly three people.

  • How to get in: put together a team of three and register in advance.
  • Who it's for: skiers and snowboarders of any level who are up for several disciplines in one day.
  • The catch: all three participants pay the entry fee, and the day is packed.

5. European Amateur Championship

The championship has been held under the auspices of the European Golf Association since 1986 and changes country every year (official website). The tournament features 144 golfers.

Entry is strict: male amateurs from the top 1600 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking and players with a WHS handicap of 0.0 or better. If applications exceed the quota, organizers form a reserve list. A spot is guaranteed in advance to the reigning champion and the winner of the South American Amateur Championship. You submit your application before the deadline and register on site. Your handicap is checked before the start.

  • How to get in: submit an application before the deadline; invited players register on site.
  • Who it's for: amateur golfers with a low handicap and ranking.
  • The catch: a 0.0 handicap cuts out almost everyone, and a no-show voids your status.

6. Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival

The Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival has been held in Taiwan since 1983 and is the oldest mass-participation event in the region (tourism bureau). The next swim is scheduled for September 20, 2026.

The distance is roughly 3000 meters: swimmers go from Zhaowu Pier to Ita Thao Pier. Anyone over 10 is admitted regardless of fitness level, and you're assigned to groups. In some years, up to 22,000 people have taken the start (organizer data).

  • How to get in: registration opens in advance; the number of spots is announced before it begins.
  • After the start: check out Ita Thao village and Lalu Island, home of the Thao tribe.
  • Who it's for: beginners and families; the 3000 meters are swum at a relaxed pace.
  • The catch: up to 22,000 people gather at the start, so arrive early.

7. Barcelona Boat Rental regatta

Barcelona Boat Rental organizes amateur regattas in Barcelona on request, at any time of year (company contacts). This is an option for teams that want not only to get out on the water, but also to bond as a group.

The company handles logistics, date selection, and crew assignments. Before the start, participants are introduced to sailing basics and safety procedures. The regatta consists of several races, with each crew led by an experienced captain. The price guide starts at around €150 per person, with the exact amount confirmed after discussing the details (official website). Your role on the crew will be assigned on shore.

  • How to join: agree on a date with the company using the form on their website.
  • Who it's for: teams of friends or colleagues who want to try sailing.
  • The catch: the format depends on group size, and the price is higher than a regular sea cruise.

8. Iron Horse Bicycle Classic

The race began with a bet between the Mayer brothers in 1971: Tom rode a bicycle, Jim took the train from Durango to Silverton. Tom won, crossing two mountain passes. Regular rides have been held since 1972, and in 2026 the festival runs from May 22 to 24 (official website).

The program includes nine events: road and gravel races, mountain biking, e-bike rides, and kids' starts. The main event, the McDonald's Citizen Tour, is 80.5 km, two mountain passes, and 1.8 km of climbing. Participants must reach the finish before the train. Races require a USA Cycling license, which is issued during registration (participation requirements).

  • How to join: register on the website and choose one or more rides.
  • Who it's for: cyclists with experience in mountain climbs.
  • The catch: Colorado's high altitude and two passes require preparation.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Do you need professional status to compete?

No. In the Bosphorus swim, the Boston Marathon, and at Sun Moon Lake, amateurs compete alongside professionals. Certain events like The Boat Race are open only to students. What limits you is not status, but qualification, handicap, or quota size.

How do you get into the Boston Marathon?

You need to run a certified marathon faster than the qualifying time for your age group and submit an application. Even with a qualifying time, a spot is not guaranteed.

How much does it cost to participate?

Amounts vary widely. At Barcelona Boat Rental, the guide price starts at around €150 per person (company pricing). A slot in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim runs into three figures in dollars, and the Boston Marathon entry fee is also in dollars and depends on citizenship. Organizers publish exact figures when registration opens, and that's where you'll see the current amount.

When does registration open for the Bosphorus swim?

Organizers announce the date of the next event in advance, registration opens on the official website, and the quota for international participants fills up quickly (swim schedule). You need to pay for your slot immediately after registering.

Can children participate?

Sun Moon Lake accepts swimmers from age 10, and groups are formed by pace (swim rules). The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has kids' races. At the other events, children don't meet the age or qualification requirements, so check the rules for the specific event before you register.

In short: what's worth booking

  • If you want a mass-participation start in Asia, choose Sun Moon Lake: simple registration and a scenic lake.
  • If qualification and status matter, aim for the Boston Marathon, but get your qualifying result ready well in advance.
  • If registering as a team is easier for you, Les 3 Vallées Enduro or the Barcelona Boat Rental regatta are good options.
  • If you're drawn to the classics, look at The Boat Race on the Thames and the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.

Accommodation near the start gets booked up early, especially during marathons and regattas. If you've already picked your city, compare hotels on Trip.com.
