China in October: where to go and how to avoid the golden week crowds

October is called the best month for a trip to China. The weather is mild, the air is dry, and the landscapes are already autumnal. But timing is everything. At the beginning of the month, the whole country goes on long national holidays, and domestic tourism surges. Shift your dates to the second half of October, and you'll see the same China without huge lines and overpriced hotels and flights. Below: weather by region, six destinations with photos, and a ready-made 15-day itinerary.

Weather in China in October: warm and dry

💡 In short:

  • The best time is the second half of October: the holiday crowds have already thinned out.
  • The north (Beijing, Xi'an) is warm during the day but cool in the evening, bring a layer.
  • The south (Guilin, Yunnan) stays summer-warm without the mugginess.
  • Citizens of Germany and the EU don't need a visa: visa-free entry for up to 30 days is valid until the end of 2026.
  • Holiday dates, visa rules, and weather: checked 09/2026 against official sources, links in the text.

In the north of the country, October is dry and clear. In Beijing, daytime temperatures are usually around 20 °C, while at night they drop to about 8 °C (according to Climates to Travel, October averages). The day-to-night swing is significant. A warm sweater for the evening is essential. There's little rain, and the air is clear. Xi'an is similar: comfortable for walking during the day, chilly in the evening.

Autumn at the Summer Palace in Beijing

The south is warmer and milder. In Shanghai, daytime temperatures stay around 18-24 °C, and the humid heat is gone (according to Climates to Travel). In Guilin, Yunnan, and Hangzhou, daytime highs are often 20-28 °C. This is the best time for active sightseeing: karst landscapes, lakes, and rice terraces. You can stay outdoors longer without the summer mugginess.

Crowds in October: what to actually expect

The massive influx happens during the "golden week," the national holidays from October 1 to 7, 2026 (according to TravelChinaGuide). During these days, around 800 million trips are made across the country. Tickets get more expensive, and major attractions have long lines. After October 7, the flow drops sharply. Plan your trip for the second half of the month: shorter lines, lower hotel and flight prices, a calmer pace. If you can't shift your dates, book everything in advance and arrive at opening time.

Visa for China: not required for the EU

Good news for travelers from Germany and other EU countries. Visa-free entry for up to 30 days with a regular passport is in effect until the end of 2026 (according to China Briefing). The passport must be valid for at least six months. You can't work under this arrangement, only tourism, business, and visits.

Separately, there's a 240-hour transit visa-free option, meaning up to 10 days (according to gov.cn). It works at 65 entry points and requires a ticket to a third country. Rules change, so do a final check on the PRC embassy website.

Where to go in October

October is good almost everywhere in China, but each destination reveals itself in its own way. We picked six regions that are especially rewarding at this time of year. For each one, we'll tell you what to do, what to fit in, and where to stay.

Pop Mart's POPLAND park in Beijing

In fall, Beijing noticeably cools down. If you go to the Great Wall in the second half of the month, the trees around it are already yellow and red. For a relaxed walk, choose the Jinshanling section: fewer people, open views.

If you're traveling with kids or love pop culture, stop by POPLAND. This is a Pop Mart universe theme park in Chaoyang Park, opened in 2023, and in spring 2026 it got new zones and its first rides, including a drop tower (according to CNN and Caixin). People take photos with Labubu and Molly here and hunt for blind boxes.

For fall colors, head to Fragrant Hills Park: the slopes turn red with maples, and there are both easy and longer trails.

  • Who it's for: first visit to China, families with kids, history lovers.
  • The catch: the Great Wall is crowded on weekends even outside holidays.

Shanghai

Shanghai is great when you want to combine city life with a relaxed pace. The heat is gone, and walking is comfortable. Start with the former French Concession, around Wukang Road and Fuxing Road: in October the plane trees turn yellow, and an unplanned walk here works best.

For ginkgo trees, head to the avenue in Huangpu district. The trees turn bright yellow by mid to late October. This is a short stop, not half a day.

If you're planning Shanghai Disneyland, go on weekdays in the second half of the month: fewer people than on weekends, and cooler. Halloween decorations are usually ready by then. Outside the city, stop by Zhujiajiao water town: canals, bridges, boats.

  • Who it's for: people who love city walks and don't like rushing.
  • The catch: on weekends both the park and the water towns get noticeably crowded.

Accommodation: Shanghai hotel prices.

Yunnan

Shuhe Old Town in Lijiang

Yunnan is about old towns, but they're all very different. In October, daytime is mild. Lijiang and Dali are still popular and crowded. If you want quieter, choose small towns like Shaxi or Weishan: the atmosphere is more authentic, and local life feels closer.

October is especially good for nature. Walk through Pudacuo National Park or bike around Napahai Lake, where the first fall colors appear.

For the harvest and rice terraces, head to Yuanyang: the harvest season begins, the fields are active, and the landscape changes before your eyes.

  • Who it's for: fans of unhurried routes and nature.
  • The catch: Lijiang and Dali are still crowded at this time.

Xi'an

Shadow theater in Xi'an

Xi'an in October asks for an unhurried pace. The Terracotta Army is still a must, but go at opening time or toward evening to avoid the crowds.

The city is known for history, but kids won't be bored here. Ride a bike along the Xi'an city wall and set up a little "race" with the children. See a shadow puppet show: in some places you can even work the puppets yourself.

For autumn scenery, head to the Zhongnan Mountains in late October: the colors come through more vividly, and it makes for a calm day outside the city.

  • Who it's for: history, families, a first China itinerary.
  • The catch: the Terracotta Army is always crowded during the day.

The silk road: Gansu and Xinjiang

Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu

A Silk Road route usually runs through Gansu and Xinjiang: deserts, mountains, ancient sites. In Xinjiang, the focus is on seasonal landscapes. Hemu Village and the poplar forests near Jinta deliver rich autumn colors.

Gansu leans more into history and culture. The Mati Temple caves are a quiet stop in the cliffs, and the Yulin Caves are calmer than the famous Mogao Caves. Stop at Jiayuguan Pass, where the Great Wall meets the desert and there's more open space than at the Beijing sections.

Expect cold weather: in October, Xinjiang and Gansu can drop below 10 °C, colder than most Chinese cities (according to Weather and Climate). If you're combining the Silk Road with Beijing and Shanghai, dress in layers.

  • Who it's for: a second or third visit, history lovers and wide-open spaces.
  • The catch: long distances and a noticeable chill in the evenings.

Chongqing

Liziba Station in Chongqing

Chongqing finally cools down in October, and the heat lets up. Hongya Cave and Liziba Station, where the train passes through a residential building, are easier to fit into one day without rushing.

For nature, head to the Nanshan scenic area: wooded hills, short trails, and viewpoints over the city. Another option is the Wulong karst park with deep canyons and limestone towers. There are shuttles and elevators if you want to save your energy.

To finish, consider a Yangtze cruise: autumn views of the Three Gorges over three days on the water.

  • Who it's for: unusual urban texture, nature, cruises.
  • The catch: hilly terrain, lots of climbs and stairs.

Where to stay: Chongqing hotel prices.

What to plan in advance

A good plan saves time. Choose destinations based on the weather and book tickets for popular attractions in advance. Check visa rules before you fly. Pack layers for both the north and the south. Allow extra time if you're traveling during Golden Week.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to China in October?

After the "golden week" ends. The first week of October is a national holiday and peak domestic tourism. From the second half of the month, lines are shorter and hotel and flight prices are noticeably lower. The pace of travel is calmer.

Do EU citizens need a visa?

Until the end of 2026, citizens of Germany and other EU countries do not need a visa for short trips, roughly up to a month (see the China Briefing visa overview). Your passport must be valid, with extra validity remaining. Do a final check on the PRC embassy website.

What is the weather like in October?

In the north it is warm during the day and cool in the evening, with a big temperature swing. In the south it is summer-warm, but without the mugginess. There is little rain across the country, and the air is dry and clear. Bring warm clothes for mountains and deserts.

What clothes should I pack?

Dress in layers. For Beijing and Xi'an you need a warm sweater for the evening. For Xinjiang and Gansu a jacket will come in handy. In the south, light clothing with a windbreaker is enough.

How many days should I plan for the trip?

For a relaxed pace, allow ten to fifteen days. In two weeks you can realistically combine the north, the center, and one nature region without rushing or long transfers.

In short: what to keep in mind before the trip

There are enough destinations in October for several trips, so choose based on your goal.

If it's your first visit: go with Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai. If you want nature: Yunnan or Chongqing with a Yangtze River cruise. If it's a second visit: the Silk Road through Gansu and Xinjiang.

Once you've settled on the cities, check hotels on Trip.com in advance, while post-holiday prices are still low.
