September and October stretch summer along with them. The sea is warm, the sun is gentle, and the museum ticket line is shorter than in August. In summer, families with children come to the island, and the beaches are packed. During the shoulder season, the main wave subsides, and there is more room by the water. You will find a spot for your umbrella even at Golden Bay, where free loungers are almost impossible to find in summer.
Prices drop too. Tour operators cut package prices, and hotels offer discounts on empty rooms. For the same week by the sea, you pay less than in July while getting the same hotel and the same beach.

Shoulder season and weather by month
The three autumn months on Malta differ from one another. The difference is visible both in air temperature and in the number of tourists on the streets.
September remains almost summery: the air is warm during the day, the water holds its heat, and you can walk in the evening without a jacket. October is slightly cooler, but swimming is still pleasant, and the beaches are less crowded. November is closer to winter: cooler during the day, stronger wind, but prices are at their lowest.
The sea cools down slowly. In November, the average water temperature in Valletta stays around 22 °C (as of 09/2026, seatemperatures.net). You can swim until the end of autumn if there is no strong wind.
Rain showers are short and heavy, and they rarely ruin a whole day. In the evening after sunset, you will need a light jacket or a raincoat.
The catch with late autumn is that it gets dark early, and some of the summer cafes along the waterfront are already closed. On the other hand, late October and November attract those who want to save money: hotels get cheaper, and there are almost no lines for excursions.
Valletta: fortresses, catacombs, and museums
Valletta was built by knights in the 16th century as a fortress city. The walls stand almost at the water's edge, and the streets rise upward in terraces. There are no ancient catacombs or burial sites in Valletta itself. St. Paul's Catacombs are in Rabat, and the Hypogeum is in Paola.

Museums are closed on January 1, on Good Friday, and on December 24, 25, and 31. Last entry everywhere is 30 minutes before closing (as of 09/2026, Heritage Malta). On certain autumn dates, the halls of the Grandmaster's Palace close until 1:30 PM, but the Armory remains open.

Beaches: sand, rock, and "wild" coves
Beaches in Malta vary more than photos suggest. Sandy coves are few, and limestone covers most of the coastline.
The main sandy beaches lie in the northwest: Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay, and Paradise Bay (according to the Malta tourist office, VisitMalta, 09/2026). The sand there is light and the water entry is gentle, so they are convenient with children. On Gozo, Ramla Bay is a long beach with reddish sand.
Rocky areas are just as good: concrete platforms and ladders let you enter the water directly from the shore, and there are usually fewer people. On Comino you will find the Blue Lagoon, a cove with a sandy bottom but no place to lie down. In autumn it is less crowded than at the height of summer.
Equipped beaches are free, but loungers and umbrellas are paid. If you plan a full day by the water, bring water and food with you: cafes near remote coves close after the season.
