Ko Chang is nothing like Phuket and Samui. There are few loud parties here, but the sea is almost always calm, and it's easy to find a free spot on the beaches.

How to get to Ko Chang from Bangkok
The journey has two stages: first to the town of Trat, then the ferry. Buses or minivans run along the highway almost all day. Flying to Trat Airport is faster but more expensive. Tickets and transfers are best booked in advance, especially in high season.
From the Ao Thammachat and Laem Ngop piers, the ferry reaches the island in 30 minutes, and a ticket costs about 80 baht (as of 09/2026, Koh Chang Ferries). Ferries run from early morning until evening. After that, a songthaew, the local shared taxi, or a taxi takes you across the island to your chosen beach.

Klong Prao Beach
A long stretch of sand in the central part of the island. There are almost no waves, the entry into the sea is gentle, and many family hotels are nearby. In the morning, the shore is good for running.

A compact beach with views of neighboring islands. In the evening, people come here to watch the sunset, and it's close to both the viewpoint and Klong Plu Waterfall.

Lonely Beach
A beach for young people and backpackers: bars, parties, and budget accommodation. During the day it's calm here, at night it's loud.

Waterfalls and the national park
The island has seven developed waterfalls, all of which belong to the national park. The most accessible and popular is Klong Plu Waterfall. A trail about 600 m long leads to it through the jungle.
At the base there's a pool with cool water and fish where you can swim. Park entry costs 200 baht per adult and 100 baht per child, with opening hours roughly from 08:00 to 16:30 (as of 09/2026, Tourism Authority of Thailand directory). The ticket is also valid for other park sites on the same day.

Viewpoints, mangroves, and kayaking
The island has several developed viewpoints. The largest is on a hill in the Kai Bae area: from there you can see the entire west coast and neighboring islands.
Mangrove forests are considered one of Ko Chang's main attractions. These trees hold the shore, protect it from waves and floods, filter water, and attract fish and shellfish.
You can rent a kayak right on the beach and head to neighboring islands or along the mangrove thickets. It's a calm way to see the island from the water.

Hotels are grouped by beach. White Sand Beach has the most options and higher prices. On Klong Prao and Kai Bae, accommodation is quieter and cheaper, with family resorts nearby. Lonely Beach has many guesthouses for budget travelers.
The average price level is lower than on Phuket and Samui, and that's the island's main advantage. Book in advance: in the dry season, good seaside options get snapped up quickly.
Temples and nightlife
Besides nature, the island has Buddhist temples. They are modest but open to visitors. Dress modestly: cover your shoulders and knees.
Nightlife is concentrated in the west and south. On Lonely Beach, bars and beach parties with live music operate. On White Sand Beach, evenings are calmer than on Lonely Beach: restaurants and bars by the sea.
