Szolnok: a city on the Tisza worth seeing
Szolnok rarely makes it onto must-see lists for Hungary. Trains heading east pass through it without stopping, and most travelers never even step onto the platform. Yet this quiet city on the Tisza can surprise you more than plenty of hyped destinations.
It is home to the longest pedestrian bridge in Central Europe. Nearby, within a radius of roughly two kilometers, you will find the city hall, places of worship of four denominations, a former synagogue, and an aviation museum. We walked this route and are sharing what you can see.

Szolnok: a city on the Tisza
Szolnok is unofficially called the capital of the Tisza, Hungary's longest river. The city spreads across both banks and, over its thousand-year history, has made good use of the water for trade and growth.
💡 In short:
- Getting there from Budapest: by train, about an hour and a half.
- You can realistically cover the main sights in one day: the center is compact.
- Adult ticket to the RepTár museum: 4,400 forints.
- Prices and opening hours: 09/2026, verified on the museum's official website
Szolnok's history mirrors that of the whole country: wars, religious strife, and a long reconciliation. Today Catholics, Lutherans, Reformed Christians, and the Jewish community coexist peacefully, and their places of worship stand almost side by side. The city manages to blend the old and the modern without leaning too far in either direction.
How to get to Szolnok
Szolnok is a major railway hub in central Hungary. Most trains heading east and southeast stop here, so the train is the most convenient option.
Trains from Budapest depart almost every hour, and the journey takes about an hour and a half. A full-price ticket costs a few thousand forints; check fares and schedules on the official MÁV website. Buses also run, but the train is faster and more comfortable.
From Debrecen, getting to Szolnok is just as easy: the trip takes about ten minutes longer. From Nyíregyháza, the easternmost regional center in the country, trains take about two hours. Want to save time in lines: train tickets for Hungary on Trip.com.
What to see: a walking tour of the center
Szolnok's main attractions are concentrated in the center, and walking is the best way to get between them. Just a couple hundred steps from the station, your first surprise awaits: a massive reinforced concrete structure that is slowly deteriorating due to the city's lack of funds.

But look closer, and you will find references to Istanbul and a miniature Neuschwanstein. There are almost no tourists around, so you will have it all to yourself.
Lajos Kossuth Square and the city hall
Historically, the heart of Szolnok was the city hall. As in most Hungarian cities, it stands on a square named after Lajos Kossuth, the hero of the mid-19th-century revolution.

Fountains create a sense of calm here, and bronze sculptures of all kinds set the mood. There is a cat following close behind a lucky fisherman, a schoolboy scattering his notebooks, and a boy with a skateboard.
Lutheran Church (Evangélikus templom)
Now let us take a look at Szolnok's churches. The first, the Lutheran Church, is a five-minute walk from Lajos Kossuth Square. It is the one that evokes Istanbul scenery, because its single tower resembles a minaret. Take a look at the photo and you will see why.

In fact, the architects were not inspired by a mosque but by a church in Wittenberg, Germany, where Martin Luther served for many years. In his honor, a smaller replica was built here in the 1930s, becoming the main church of Szolnok's Lutherans. The city survived Ottoman rule, but most of its current churches were built after it ended.
Verseghy Park and the rose garden (Verseghy park)
Next up is Verseghy Park and its rose garden, a favorite strolling spot for locals. It is a good place to pause before visiting the next churches.

The rose garden, with rare varieties of Hungarian roses, was planted at the same time.
Here you will find plenty of landscape design ideas: flower arches, a small pool with frog sculptures, and quiet corners for introverts. A good spot to rest after a walk. You will know where to come back to.
Reformed Church (Református templom)
Another nod to German architecture awaits you at the Reformed Church. This is the mini-Neuschwanstein: three small towers and a neo-Gothic profile reaching upward.
© Máté · CC BY-SAPhoto: Máté, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe church was built in the late 19th century, when the country was experiencing a construction boom. Red brick and narrow, tall windows give it a fortress-like appearance.
Former synagogue, now the Szolnok gallery
Religious architecture in the center continues with the building of the former Jewish synagogue. Note that all these places of worship are lined up one after another within a couple of hundred meters of each other.

Most of the city's Jews perished during the Holocaust. After the war, the community became too small, and the house of prayer was no longer needed. The building was turned into an art gallery, after first removing the Stars of David, Torah symbols, and the entrance grille.
Holy trinity church (belvárosi templom)
Catholics were not far behind either, building the Holy Trinity Church, the city's main Catholic church and one of its oldest buildings. It is only a couple of hundred meters from the synagogue.

While construction was underway, the building kept deteriorating, requiring constant reconstruction. Holy Trinity Church acquired its current appearance only by the mid-19th century.
Tiszavirág híd pedestrian bridge
Now let's take a break from the old town and head to the river. The Tiszavirág híd bridge is a source of particular pride for locals. It is 444 meters long and weighs 550 tons. It is considered the longest pedestrian bridge in Central Europe (according to Szolnoki Értéktár).
© Akela3 · CC BY-SAPhoto: Akela3, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia CommonsFinding the bridge is easy: turn from Holy Trinity Church toward the river. The slender, airy structure is visible from afar. The bridge was named after the tiszavirág, a mayfly. Its mass emergence on the Tisza once a year is called the "blooming of the Tisza" and is considered a symbol of the river's purity.
Be sure to walk across the bridge. The springy structure sways slightly, which adds a bit of adrenaline to the walk. On the other bank of the Tisza is a spa area where locals like to relax.
Holy spirit church in újváros (újvárosi szentlélek-templom)
On the way to the next location, stop by Holy Spirit Church in Újváros. Its location may give you pause, because it is a cemetery church.
© Pasztilla aka Attila Terbócs · CC BY-SAPhoto: Pasztilla aka Attila Terbócs, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsIf you have no objection to short visits to a cemetery, stop by. The Neo-Renaissance building is worth it: the unusual combination of an entrance colonnade and a lone soaring tower will stay with you for a long time.
RepTár aviation museum
Another item on the agenda: the RepTár aviation museum. One Tripadvisor user called it "the only worthwhile place in Szolnok," but as you have already seen, that is not true. The museum itself, however, is genuinely good, especially if you are traveling with children.

The museum is divided into indoor and outdoor sections. The yard houses a large collection of military aircraft and helicopters: from Soviet MiG-21s and Mi-8s to the German Bf 108 and the Czech L-39 trainer.
An adult ticket costs 4,400 forints; children and seniors enter free (as of 09/2026, official RepTár website). Flight simulators cost extra, at 1,500 forints each.
What else is worth seeing
On your way back, take a walk along the Tisza embankment. In some places it looks like a path through the trees, but it quickly turns into a well-maintained promenade. In quiet Szolnok, this is a good spot to be alone with yourself and the river.
If you feel like it, the walk will lead you to the site of the former castle. Almost nothing remains of it, but the Church of Our Lady of the Hungarians (Vártemplom) was built on the spot. It was constructed from stones of the destroyed Turkish mosque and the remains of a medieval church.
Once you return to the center, give yourself a break. Tisza Szálló és Thermálfürdő is a good fit: guests have access to two Turkish baths, saunas, and thermal springs that Hungarian land is famous for. Staying here is not cheap, so compare prices in advance: Tisza Szálló prices on Trip.com.
A day in Szolnok turns out to be packed but not exhausting. If you have time left, come back to Lajos Kossuth Square in the evening: with the lights on, it looks completely different.
