Where in Europe to swim in June: coasts with water from 14 to 24 °C

Where in Europe to swim in June: coasts with water from 14 to 24 °C

June in Europe is underrated as a swimming month. The air is already summery, beaches are half empty, and accommodation prices haven't caught up with July yet. And still, many people come back with the same complaint: the water was too cold.

The sea lags behind the air by about six weeks. If it's 28 °C on shore during the day, the water may hold around 18 °C. What matters here isn't latitude but the shape of the sea: shallow, enclosed bays warm up quickly, while deep, open coastlines with cold water upwelling stay cold (Copernicus Marine Service, as of 09/2026).

Below are the June climate averages for more than thirty coastlines and ten lakes. With them, you can see in advance where swimming is comfortable and where the water is only good for a quick dip. We'll also look at why the Adriatic outpaces the rest of the Mediterranean, and why Portugal isn't suitable for swimming in June.

How to read these numbers

💡 In short:

  • Comfortable water in June is found in the Adriatic, the eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus: 23-24 °C.
  • The western Mediterranean delivers a steady 22-23 °C at moderate prices.
  • The Baltic and North Sea hold 14-16 °C, which isn't enough for a beach vacation.
  • June averages were checked on 12.09.2026 on the Copernicus Marine Service website.

Three thresholds explain more than any tenth of a degree. Below 17 °C, swimming turns into a brief endurance test lasting a few minutes. From 18 to 21 °C, the water is tolerable if the air is warm and the sun is shining: you go in, swim for a couple of minutes, and head back to your lounger. From 22 °C, what people usually call a beach vacation begins: you can spend half an hour in the water without getting cold. At 25 °C and above, it no longer refreshes (Copernicus climate data, 09/2026).

The second point: June changes a lot from start to finish. In the first days, the coast is often two to three degrees colder than the average; in the last week, it's warmer by the same amount. If swimming is your priority, book the end of June, not the beginning.

As of: June climate averages for surface temperature, BSH for the Baltic and North Sea, Copernicus for the Atlantic and Mediterranean, checked on 12.09.2026.

Most coastlines in the table hold 22 °C and above. They're suitable for normal swimming; anything lower requires tolerance for cold water. The spread within a single country can be greater than between countries: western Portugal and the Algarve differ by four degrees.

Baltic and North Sea: not the season in June

On the German coast, the swimming season statistically begins only at the end of June. The Baltic warms up faster in June than in any other month: from 12 °C at the start to 17-18 °C at the end (BSH data, 09/2026). The 15 °C average hides this spread, so the travel date matters more than the choice of resort.

Sandy shore of the Baltic Sea in Latvia

Wind matters no less than air temperature. With a steady easterly wind, the warm surface water moves away from the shore, and cold deep water rises to replace it. Such upwelling can drop the water from 20 to 13 °C within a day (BSH upwelling data, 09/2026). You plan swimming on the Baltic as a bonus, not as the program.

The North Sea is one to two degrees colder due to tidal mixing. But the Wadden Sea offers an effect no Mediterranean coastline has: at low tide, warmed water sits in the shallow channels and over the sandbanks, noticeably above the official value.

  • The catch: because of the wind, swimming on the Baltic can't be planned in advance.
  • Who it's for: trips for walks and empty beaches, where swimming isn't the main goal.

Atlantic: why Portugal doesn't work in June

Along the western coast of Iberia, the cold Canary Current flows south, and in summer coastal upwelling adds to it. That's why the Atlantic off Porto, Nazaré, and Peniche stays at 16-19 °C even in August (Copernicus Atlantic data, 09/2026).

If you want to swim in Portugal, head south. On the Algarve the coast turns east, the upwelling of cold water disappears, and temperatures rise to 20 °C, and in the eastern Algarve near Tavira slightly higher (Copernicus data for the Algarve, 09/2026). The difference from the west coast reaches four degrees under the same weather.

The Canary Islands stand apart: water fluctuates over the year only between 19 and 23 °C, and in June it stays around 21 °C (Copernicus data for the Canaries, 09/2026). Not warm, but predictable, and the air rarely goes above 25 °C. For a trip with kids, that kind of stability is more convenient than heat.

  • The catch: Portugal's west coast is cold year-round, so it doesn't work for a beach vacation.
  • Who it's for: those heading to southern Portugal, and those who want predictable water without the heat.

Accommodation in the Algarve gets more expensive by July faster than in the north of the country: see Algarve hotels on Trip.com.

Western Mediterranean: steady 22-23 °C

Spain's Mediterranean coast, the Balearics, the French Riviera, Liguria, Sardinia, and the Tyrrhenian Sea form a single block in June at 22-23 °C (Copernicus data for the western Mediterranean, 09/2026). These coasts offer the most reliable compromise between warm water, moderate prices, and a reasonable trip from Central Europe.

There is one exception within the block. In the Gulf of Lion between Montpellier and Marseille, the mistral blows in and the water drops several degrees within two days. In June this happens more often than in August.

  • The catch: between Montpellier and Marseille the water in June is less stable than along the rest of the coast.
  • Who it's for: those who want a balance of water, price, and a short flight.

The Adriatic: Europe's fastest-warming sea

The northern Adriatic is shallow, averaging about 30 meters, and it also receives warm fresh water from the Po, Adige, and Isonzo rivers. As a result, Grado, Lignano, Caorle, and Venice hold around 24 °C in June (Copernicus data on the Adriatic, 09/2026). Only the eastern coast of Cyprus matches that; the rest of Europe's coasts are colder.

For travelers from Bavaria, Austria, and eastern Switzerland, this is the shortest route to genuinely warm water: Munich to Grado is about 500 kilometers on the map. You can cover that distance in a single day and not spend it on flights.

Adriatic coast of Dalmatia from above

Further south, the Adriatic gets deeper and the water gets colder. Istria holds around 22 °C, central Dalmatia around 23 °C (Copernicus data on Dalmatia, 09/2026). The bora, a cold katabatic wind along the Croatian coast, knocks off two or three degrees, but it blows noticeably less often in summer than in winter.

  • The catch: along the Croatian coast, water temperature depends on the wind and can be cooler than average.
  • Who it's for: road trips and anyone who wants warm water from the first week of June.

The eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus

In June, Cyprus shares the top spot for warm water with the northern Adriatic. The eastern coast around Ayia Napa and Protaras reaches 24 °C, while the southern coast near Paphos is 23 °C (Copernicus data on Cyprus, 09/2026).

The Greek islands are a couple of degrees cooler. The Aegean has its own quirk: the meltemi, which blows from the north from June through September, cools the western shores of the Cyclades. On Naxos or Paros, the eastern coast runs one or two degrees warmer than the western coast in hot weather.

Athens and the Attica coast stay modest in June, around 21 °C (Copernicus data on Attica, 09/2026). Crete and Rhodes at roughly 23 °C are noticeably warmer.

  • The catch: in the Cyclades, you have to pick your beach with an eye on the wind.
  • Who it's for: anyone who wants the warmest possible water and stable weather.

Europe's lakes instead of the sea

If the sea is too far away, look at the big lakes. Shallow lakes warm up noticeably faster in June than the deep pre-Alpine lakes, and the difference between them can reach four degrees.

Lake Balaton is shallow, so it warms up faster than anywhere else in the region: solar heat reaches almost to the bottom. In June the lake regularly beats the Baltic Sea by several degrees. Lake Neusiedl stays level with Balaton. Attersee and Wolfgangsee are cooler than even Lake Constance and Lake Geneva, and they are nowhere near Balaton.

  • The catch: the water in large Alpine lakes is almost always cool, so they are not suitable for long swims.
  • Who it's for: for road trips and for those looking for an alternative to the seaside.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Where in Europe is the water already warm in June?

In the Adriatic, the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus. The warmest water is at Grado, Lignano and Ayia Napa. It is enough for a half-hour swim.

Can you swim in the Baltic Sea in June?

Yes, but you should plan swimming as a bonus. The average water temperature is around fifteen degrees, rising to seventeen or eighteen by the end of June. Some years bring comfortable days, but this sea cannot be called reliable: an east wind pushes the warm water away again. If you are going for swimming, take the second half of the month.

Why is the Adriatic warmer than the rest of the Mediterranean?

Because of its shallow depth and warm river water. The warm layer reaches almost to the bottom, so Grado and Venice outpace the Gulf of Naples and Sardinia in June.

Which is warmer in June, Cyprus or Crete?

Cyprus, but the difference is small, about one degree. Cyprus has less wind cooling, so the water is more stable.

When is it better to go, at the beginning or at the end of June?

At the end. Over the month the water rises by two to four degrees: early June is often colder than average, the last week is warmer. Changing the date gives you more than changing the destination. If your vacation falls at the beginning of the month, choose the Adriatic, Cyprus or the eastern Mediterranean.

In short: what to book

For warm water in June, the Adriatic, the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus work well; for a balance of water, price and travel time, the western Mediterranean. The Baltic and the Atlantic stay cold, but they win on price and empty beaches.

  • If you want the warmest water: Cyprus and the northern Adriatic.
  • If a short flight and a moderate price matter: Mallorca, Costa Blanca, the French Riviera.
  • If you are driving: Grado, Lignano, Istria.
  • If budget matters more than temperature: the Baltic or Lake Constance, but swimming there will be short.
