Where to go for autumn break: eleven destinations for October

Where to go for autumn break: eleven destinations for October

In October, beach season winds down in Europe, but the warmth doesn't. The Aegean Sea stays comfortable for swimming. In South Tyrol, they're already roasting chestnuts and tasting young wine. London's parks turn copper and gold. We've put together eleven destinations for fall getaways, from a short flight to Athens to a long-haul trip to the Seychelles. For each one, you'll find who it suits and what the catch is. Prices and opening hours were checked in September 2026, with the date listed next to them.

Where it's still warm in October

💡 In short:

  • For warm sea, head east: Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece keep the water swimmable longer than Italy or Spain.
  • Athens and Naxos are connected by ferries, so you can see the city and the islands in one trip.
  • South Tyrol is in wine season in October, and you get chestnuts and mountains without the summer heat.
  • Long-haul fall trips come in two flavors: the Caribbean in Mexico and the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
  • Prices and opening hours: 09/2026, checked on the official Acropolis website.

The main rule of autumn in Europe is simple. The farther east you go, the longer the sea holds its warmth. Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece beat the western Mediterranean by almost a month of swimming.

The exception lies far out in the Atlantic. Around the Azores, the water climbs above twenty degrees in October. These islands aren't worth choosing for the beach alone. Their nature is too varied: craters, waterfalls, hot springs.

1. Athens and Naxos: antiquity and the Aegean Sea

Athens is great because the city and the islands combine into one trip. The major airport and the port of Piraeus are connected by commuter rail. Ferries leave for the Cyclades every day. Spend two days in the capital, then sail off to Naxos.

On the rock of the Acropolis stand the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the sanctuary of the goddess Nike. Some of the sculptures have been replaced with copies. The originals are kept nearby, in the Acropolis Museum. The museum sits on stilts with a glass floor, and you can see the excavations through it.

  • Cost: admission €30, reduced ticket €15, free admission on October 28 (as of: 09/2026, official Acropolis website).
  • Opening hours: October 1 to 15 until 6:30 PM, from October 16 until 6:00 PM (as of: 09/2026, official website).
  • Who it's for: those who want to combine antiquity and swimming.
  • Not for: those who are only going for the beach.
  • The catch: the rock is constantly under restoration, and some structures are covered in scaffolding.

Book a timed-entry ticket in advance: Acropolis tickets on Tiqets. In October the lines are shorter than in July, but a time slot saves you an hour of your morning.

The ferry from Piraeus to Naxos takes almost six hours. The port is visible from far away. The Portara rises above the entrance to the bay. It is a marble gate almost six meters high, the remains of an unfinished temple of Apollo.

Above Naxos Town stands the Venetian Kastro fortress. Of the twelve defensive towers, only one survives. On the roof of the former Ursuline monastery there is a terrace, Avaton 1739, with a wine bar and a view of the sea.

The beaches begin south of Naxos Town. You can reach the long Plaka Beach by bus, no car needed.

2. The Azores: nine islands and volcanoes

The Azores lie in the Atlantic between Europe and America. A mild subtropical climate prevails here all year round. In October you will find greenery, not heat.

Sete Cidades volcanic lakes in the Azores

The islands' landscapes change quickly. Sheer cliffs sit next to sandy beaches several kilometers long, while inland there are roaring waterfalls and lakes in craters. Add to that hot springs and natural lava pools, especially on the main island of São Miguel.

The archipelago's capital, Ponta Delgada, receives the main airport. There are no direct flights, so you fly with a connection in Lisbon or Porto.

On São Miguel, the Gorreana tea plantation, founded in the late 19th century, is worth a visit. It is the only tea plantation in the European Union. The mild, frost-free climate produces a full-bodied Orange Pekoe tea. Even more unusual is the Augusto Arruda pineapple plantation, where tropical fruit has been grown in greenhouses for over a century.

Those who want to climb Portugal's highest volcano head to the island of Pico and hope for good weather. The summit, over two thousand meters high, often sits in clouds for weeks at a time. Hidden in the crater is Piquinho, a smaller rock, and it is considered the true summit.

Flores lies further west than the other islands and is considered the most untouched. The PR 2 FLO hiking trail leads through abandoned villages to waterfalls. The archipelago's oldest town, Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • How to get there: fly with a connection in Lisbon or Porto; local airlines and ferries run between the islands.
  • Who it's for: people who love volcanoes, trekking and hot springs.
  • Not for: those who came only to lie on the beach.
  • The catch: the weather changes several times a day, so you need a rain jacket even in October.

3. South Tyrol: wine, chestnuts and mountain trails

South Tyrol combines a Mediterranean lifestyle with Alpine tradition. Mountain stays and farm stays on fruit and wine estates can be found on the Roter Hahn portal: it lists more than 1,600 farmsteads (as of 09/2026, Roter Hahn). This option suits you if you want to stay on a farm rather than in a hotel.

In autumn the foliage on the slopes turns gold and red. Walking becomes the main activity. Trails lead to huts in the meadows, where children find playgrounds and adults enjoy long lunches. The mild climate south of the main Alpine ridge extends the season until late October.

Along the Südtiroler Weinstraße in October, concerts from the Weinklänge project take place. They are held in castles, estates and wineries, and the wine to accompany the music comes from neighboring cellars.

A walk through Merano along the Passer river and the modern thermal baths in this resort take up a whole day. For dinner, try the lively Pizzeria 357, which serves craft beer from Italian breweries and organic wine.

The region's main autumn tradition is called Törggelen. Wine estates open their farmhouse parlors and serve local dishes, roasted chestnuts and young wine. The highest level of gastronomy is available at the Michelin-starred restaurants of Trentino and South Tyrol, of which there are more than twenty.

Walks often end on the Waalwege, old irrigation channels. In Vinschgau and Burggrafenamt many of them still work today, and some were built as early as the 13th century.

  • How to get there: trains run to Merano and Bolzano from Innsbruck and Verona; a car is only needed for remote farmsteads.
  • Who it's for: families with children and anyone who loves wine, chestnuts and walking.
  • Not for: those looking for heat and swimming in the sea.
  • The catch: evenings in the valleys are already cold, so bring a warm jacket.

You can conveniently book a farmstay or hotel in the valley here: South Tyrol hotels and farmsteads on Trip.com.

4. Milan and Turin: fashion, museums, and one train

The high-speed Frecciarossa connects Milan and Turin, and the trip takes under an hour. The two cities are easy to combine into one trip, and you change scenery without a flight.

Milan is not what you'd call a beautiful city, but there's something interesting at every turn. Fashion lovers head to the area around Via Monte Napoleone and to the Armani/Silos museum with its collection of four hundred of the designer's suits. Art lovers climb to the terrace of Milan Cathedral and book tickets for Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" at Santa Maria delle Grazie. Foodies and night owls find their spots at the Peck gourmet shop, Bar Basso, and the Navigli canal district.

Turin was Italy's first capital. The former Fiat Lingotto factory has become a cultural and shopping center: architect Renzo Piano preserved the rooftop test track and added a concert hall, a hotel, and the Agnelli collection museum.

The strange Mole Antonelliana structure was the tallest brick building in Europe by the end of the 19th century. A glass elevator takes you up through the dome to an observation deck with views of Turin, the Po River, and the Alps. On rainy days, the city is easy to explore under the arcades that stretch for kilometers.

  • How to get there: Frecciarossa and Italo trains.
  • Who it's for: city travelers, museum, fashion, and Italian food lovers.
  • Not for: those who want mountains and a beach.
  • The catch: "The Last Supper" admits visitors in timed sessions, and tickets sell out quickly.

5. London and Brighton: autumn parks and the Royal Pavilion

Only in October do London's parks show their red and rust-colored foliage. Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, and Hampstead Heath work for both a long walk and a short one if rain sets in.

The country's political life is only partly visible from the street. You can only view the prime minister's residence at number ten Downing Street from a distance, behind the barrier. But Westminster Palace, where both houses of parliament sit, is open for guided tours or with an audio guide. Both options explain the structure of the British system of government in detail.

For Londoners themselves, seaside Brighton has been a weekend destination for two hundred years. King George IV built the Royal Pavilion here as an exotic little nest for himself and his favorite: from the outside the palace looks Indian-Islamic, while the interior is decorated in Chinese style.

The Brighton i360 observation tower gives you a panorama of the city, the English Channel, and, on clear days, the French coast. The train from London's Victoria station to the south coast takes about an hour.

  • Documents: entering the UK requires a paid electronic ETA, £20 (as of 09/2026, Home Office). The permit is valid for two years, and a passport is required in any case.
  • Who it's for: those who love museums, parks, and sea air.
  • Not for: those who want guaranteed heat.
  • The catch: rain can cut your walk short, so plan a museum for the second half of the day.

6. Riviera Maya in Mexico: the Caribbean in October

In Mexico, the rainy season runs from May through September and October. In October the weather is already improving, and the big crowds haven't arrived yet. The real beach season starts later, in December.

Swimming is most convenient on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Riviera Maya stretches from north to south: from Cancun through Playa del Carmen with its Playacar hotel area to Tulum. Between them you'll find long sandy beaches and reef access points.

  • How to get there: a long-haul flight with a connection, then a transfer along the coast.
  • Who it's for: those who want a warm sea in late autumn.
  • Not for: those who don't handle humidity well.
  • The catch: tropical downpours still happen at the beginning of the month.

If you're planning to spend the winter by the sea, check out hotels in the Riviera Maya on Trip.com.

7. Seychelles: islands between two seasons

October in the Seychelles falls into the gap between the peak season and the winter rains. The weather stays good, and hotel occupancy is lower than in December.

Mahe, the largest island in the archipelago, rises above nine hundred meters. In Morne Seychellois National Park, trails between cliffs, granite boulders, and humid forest will suit you. On Mahe's southwestern beaches, swimming requires caution due to strong currents. The northern Beau Vallon bay is calmer, and that's where most hotels are located.

Praslin holds two beaches from world rankings, Anse Kerlan and Anse Lazio. Inland lies Vallee de Mai, a World Heritage site where the largest grove of an endemic palm grows. Its fruits, nearly half a meter long, hide coco de mer nuts, the largest seeds in the plant world.

The third island of the granite group, La Digue, is recognized by Pointe Source d'Argent bay. The shore is strewn with pink granite boulders, and you paddle through the shallow water in a transparent kayak. Nearby in L'Union Estate park, vanilla, chili peppers, and nutmeg grow, and giant Seychelles tortoises live here, reaching up to two hundred years of age.

Dive cruises operate in these waters on historic wooden vessels. The water at many sites is warm and calm, and visibility for fish and corals stays clear. Between dives, you go ashore on small islands that regular vessels don't reach.

  • How to get there: a flight with a connection in Dubai or Doha, with ferries and small aircraft between the islands.
  • Who it's for: those who saved up for a long-haul trip and want granite bays.
  • Not for: those looking for lively resorts with nightlife.
  • The catch: strong currents on Mahe's southwestern beaches mean swimming there isn't always possible.

Book hotels on the two islands in advance: hotels on Mahe and Praslin on Trip.com.

8. German cities: Berlin, Lubeck, Freiburg

October is a good time for a trip through German cities: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt are known for their architecture, art, and green surroundings. Most of the interesting sights are within half an hour of the train station, so you don't need a car.

It's not just about big cities. Lübeck shows an old Hanseatic town, a marzipan museum, and a beach in Travemünde right at the city limits. Freiburg packs a lot of life into a small area and sits close to the autumn forests of the Black Forest. Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle, with its half-timbered houses, is especially lovely during the grape harvest.

  • How to get there: Deutsche Bahn trains connect the cities without transfers; tickets are cheaper on weekdays.
  • Who it's for: those planning short weekend trips.
  • Not for: those looking for the sea and a beach.
  • The catch: during school holidays, central hotels get booked up early, so reserve ahead.

9. Altes Land: apples and migratory birds

West of Hamburg lies Altes Land, Germany's largest contiguous fruit-growing region. More than ten million apple, cherry, pear, and plum trees grow here, and almost the entire area is devoted to apples.

Boskop and Pinova varieties ripen right around the autumn school break, so you can pick fruit straight from the tree. At Obsthof Matthies and Herzapfelhof Lühs farms, the Apfelexpress runs through the orchards, and Herzapfelhof operates an organic farm.

A real surprise awaits you in the Kehdinger Elbmarsch. Every autumn, tens of thousands of migratory birds from Scandinavia and Siberia gather here on their way to the Atlantic.

  • How to get there: commuter train or car from Hamburg, then bike along the dikes.
  • Who it's for: families with children and bird lovers.
  • Not for: those who want city breaks and museums.
  • The catch: the picking window is short; varieties like Boskop ripen for only a few weeks.

10. Brandenburg: a vacation in the Elbe valley

The Flusslandschaft Elbe biosphere reserve is a UNESCO site and remains one of the last natural river valleys in Central Europe. Tourism here develops as part of a sustainable economy, so what you see is not a park but a living river.

The landscape is made up of the riverbed, floodplain meadows, oxbow lakes, and forests. Hiking and cycling routes along the Elbe are ready for almost the entire length, so you can go day after day without a car.

Getting close to wildlife is realistic even with a child. Beavers and white storks live here, and in the cold season northern geese and swans appear. Children from seven to twelve can join the Junior Ranger program. The historic Lenzen Castle houses the Ahead Burghotel with vegan dining.

  • How to get there: by train to Lenzen or Wittenberge, then continue by bike.
  • Who it's for: cyclists and families who want quiet.
  • Not for: those who need bars, shopping, and tour buses.
  • The catch: there are few large hotels and shops nearby, so in the evening you are left with nature.

11. River cruises: demand at a record high

Cruises are booming: in 2025, ocean and river ships carried a record 4.2 million passengers from Germany, of which 860,000 were on river routes (according to DRV). The river remains a convenient way to see several countries without packing a suitcase every day.

In Germany, the Rhine is the most popular choice. Depending on the route, you call at Alsace in France, Antwerp in Belgium, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. There is also demand for the Moselle, the Main-Danube Canal, and the Elbe.

More variety comes from combining the Saar, Moselle, Rhine, and Neckar. If you are not ready for a week on board, take a short segment and add cities on shore to it.

  • How to get there: docks are in city centers, and you can walk to them from the train station.
  • Who it's for: those who don't want to pack a suitcase every day.
  • Not for: those who prefer mountains and hiking routes.
  • The catch: it is cooler on the water than on shore, so you will need a windbreaker.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Where can you still swim in the sea in October?

You can swim east of the usual routes. In Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece, the water stays warm longer than in Italy or Spain. For Athens and Naxos, this is the last month of a full beach vacation. Around the Azores, the water stays above twenty degrees, but people go there more for volcanoes and trekking.

How much does the Acropolis cost and when is it free?

The ticket costs 30 €, reduced 15 € (as of 09/2026, official Acropolis website). Free entry is available on October 28 and on the last weekend of September. In October, the Acropolis is open until 6:30 pm in the first half of the month and until 6:00 pm in the second. Book your entry slot in advance; the line is shorter in the morning.

What to do in South Tyrol in October?

October gives you wine season and gastronomy. Along the Südtiroler Weinstraße, Weinklänge concerts take place, and wine estates open their parlors for Törggelen with chestnuts and young wine. During the day, you walk along trails to mountain huts or along the old Waalwege channels. Choose your overnight stay on the Roter Hahn portal, which lists more than 1,600 farmsteads.

Is it worth going to the Seychelles in October?

Yes, October falls between the high season and the winter rains. On Mahé, you hike through Morne Seychellois National Park; on Praslin, you see Anse Lazio and Vallée de Mai; on La Digue, you paddle a kayak among pink granite boulders. On the southwestern beaches of Mahé, be careful with currents; the northern bay of Beau Vallon is calmer.

What documents do you need for a trip to London?

Besides your passport, you need a paid electronic ETA, which costs 20 £ (as of 09/2026, Home Office). The authorization is valid for two years and should be obtained in advance, before buying tickets. For a trip to Brighton, no separate document is needed; the same ETA and passport are enough.

In short: what to book

If you have a week and are flying from Germany, choose Athens and Naxos: two days in the city, then a ferry and the beaches of the Cyclades. If you want wine and mountains, go to South Tyrol, where you sleep on a farm and dine in mountain parlors. For warm sea in November, choose the Riviera Maya; for a far-flung and peaceful vacation, the Seychelles.

Short trips work differently. A free weekend is covered by Berlin, Lübeck, or Freiburg. With children, you can cover Altes Land and the Elbe cycling dikes in a single day.

  • Long-haul flight: Seychelles or Riviera Maya.
  • Warmth and sea: Athens and Naxos, the Azores.
  • Wine, mountains, food: South Tyrol, Turin.
  • Weekend nearby: Berlin, Lübeck, Freiburg, Altes Land.
