What Art Basel Miami Beach is

💡 In short:

  • Art Basel Miami Beach: the American edition of the Art Basel fair, three public days in December.
  • Venue: Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami Beach, Florida.
  • Tickets are sold only through the fair's official website. It is best to avoid resellers.
  • Prices and hours: as of 09/2026, verified on the fair's official website

Art Basel operates in three cities at once. The Swiss edition takes place in June, the Hong Kong edition in March, and the American edition closes the season in December. This calendar is convenient to check in advance if you are planning two cities in one year.

Inside, this is not a museum stroll. Galleries bring works for sale, collectors come to buy, and you step into a venue where contemporary art is shown in one hall and on the same dates. Over four days you can see both established names and graduates of young programs.

The atmosphere is driven by the parallel program: screenings, talks, gallery parties. Wear comfortable shoes and allow at least three hours for one hall.

Dates and venue in 2026

The public days of the American edition are set for December 4-6, 2026. The venue is the same as in previous years, the Miami Beach Convention Center (as of 09/2026, organizer's schedule).

December in Miami Beach is high season. Accommodation prices rise, and flights get booked months ahead. Plan your trip with a buffer and keep a couple of hotels as backup options.

Preview days are closed to the general public, so the main flow runs from Friday through Sunday. If you want a calm viewing, come at opening: by midday the central aisles fill up, and lines form at the major booths.

History of the fair

The first Art Basel took place in Basel in the 1970s. Three Swiss gallerists stood at its origins: Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt. The idea was simple: bring together dealers in one city whose names already meant something in Europe.

From its early years the fair drew collectors from across Europe, and in the 1980s photography sections were added to painting and sculpture. That took the exhibition beyond a single niche and turned it into a survey of the entire market.

The fair expanded beyond Switzerland in the early 2000s, when the Miami Beach edition appeared. A decade later the Asian venue in Hong Kong was added. Today it is three fairs under one brand and a shared calendar for collectors.

Fair sectors

The Miami Beach space is divided into sectors, each with its own niche. Galleries holds the main program: it shows both established masters and strong newcomers. Kabinett is responsible for curated selections, including historical and solo presentations. Nova and Positions are given to young artists. Survey brings together galleries with distinct practices that matter from a historical perspective. Meridians is monumental projects and performances, and Magazines displays covers of art magazines from several decades.

The list of participants for each sector is updated before opening and published on the participants page. Grab a map at the entrance: there are more than two hundred booths inside, and without a plan you will spend your first hour just getting oriented.

Program and discussions

Beyond the booths, the fair runs a talks program. Public discussions are included in the ticket, but seating is limited, so arrive early to secure a spot.

Topics from past editions include the connection between history, language, and geography, cultural memory, and the role of technology in contemporary art. Some sessions are given to directors of major American museums: they talk about how they are reconfiguring their buildings and attracting new audiences.

Films and performances run in parallel with the main days. The exact schedule is published on the official website closer to the dates, and it is worth checking in the morning before you head out. If you only want to see the booths, plan your first day without discussions.

Art Basel Miami Beach partners

The partner lineup makes it clear whose market this is. The fair's global lead partner is UBS bank (as of 09/2026, fair website). The bank has supported Art Basel for many years and separately funds programs on contemporary art.

The fashion house Louis Vuitton has also worked with the fair for several years. Artists design the brand's spaces, and the collaboration goes beyond a single booth. This is how fashion and contemporary art exchange names and audiences.

The luxury real estate agency Sotheby's International Realty comes to the fair with its own theme. The company promotes its architectural direction, and the organizers give luxury properties a dedicated exhibition.

How to get to the fair and buy tickets

Tickets are sold only by the organizer. Day and three-day passes cost a double-digit dollar amount; categories and prices are published closer to the start of sales (verified 09/13/2026 on the organizer's page). Buy in advance: the December weekend is peak season, and a line forms at the entrance on weekends.

If you are coming for art for the first time, get a Friday ticket and arrive at opening. That way you will have time for both the booths and the discussions. On Saturday, allow more time: that is the busiest day in the halls.

A fair ticket does not cover city tours. Book Miami tours on GetYourGuide on the second day, once you have already seen the booths.

What to see in Miami Beach

Outside the convention center, the city runs its own program. Ocean Drive and the Art Deco Historic District showcase pastel Art Deco facades, Lincoln Road works as a pedestrian art alley, and Wynwood Walls brings together murals in a former warehouse district.

Set aside one day for the city: beach in the morning, fair in the afternoon, dinner in South Beach in the evening. The center of Miami Beach is easy to walk around, and you can reach Wynwood by taxi or bus.

Check Miami Beach hotels on Trip.com in advance: accommodation near the convention center gets booked up as early as fall, and prices during the fair are higher than usual.

Basel: the Swiss edition of the fair

The Swiss Art Basel takes place in June and is considered the brand's main venue. It features more historical works and first-tier galleries, and the city itself is compact: you can walk from the train station to the exhibition halls.

If you have never been to Switzerland, start with our introduction to Switzerland. And keep in mind that June in Basel is fair season: book your Basel accommodation on Trip.com in advance.

Hong Kong: the Asian edition of the fair

The next Asian edition will run from March 25 to 27, 2027 (as of 09/2026, official website). The format is the same: galleries, sectors, and a talks program, just in a different city and with a different audience.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When does Art Basel Miami Beach take place?

Public day dates are listed in the "Dates and venue in 2026" section above. Closed preview days for professionals come before them. The exact preview schedule and opening hours are published on the fair's website closer to the dates.

How much does a ticket to the fair cost?

Day and three-day admission cost a double-digit dollar amount; the organizer publishes the exact categories and prices on the fair's website closer to when sales open. Buy tickets only there: reseller markups are especially noticeable in December.

Where does the exhibition take place in Miami?

The fair venue is the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida. From South Beach hotels you can walk to the entrance or get there in a few minutes. Parking near the center is packed during the fair, so take a taxi or bus.

Can I buy a ticket on site?

An online ticket is cheaper and more reliable, but some categories are also sold at the entrance. On weekends the box office is slower, so you risk losing an hour in line. Buy in advance if you are coming for two or three days.

What to see in Miami Beach besides the fair?

Besides the fair, it is worth setting aside time for Ocean Drive, the Art Deco Historic District, Lincoln Road, and Wynwood Walls. One day is enough for the city: beach in the morning, booths in the afternoon, dinner in South Beach in the evening. That way you will see both the art program and Miami Beach itself.

In short: what to book

  • If you are planning a week: add Ocean Drive and Wynwood, and book accommodation for the whole period at once.
  • If you want two editions in one year: compare June in Basel and March in Hong Kong and choose based on your calendar.
