Read more →The destination is chosen and the tickets are almost bought. What remains are the questions a trip is really made of: how to get out of the airport, where to get mobile data, whether to rent a car, how much to budget for two weeks. These are the questions that bring people to the "Travel tips" section. We have grouped the answers by topic so you do not have to hunt for them across different sites.
Most of the articles are about getting around. We look at how to get from the airport to the city: there are pieces on Oslo, Athens, Zurich and Koh Samui. Each one compares the options: train, bus, taxi, transfer. Journeys between cities are covered separately: the train from Salzburg to Vienna and from Rome to Naples, ways to get from Paris to Amsterdam, night trains from Germany. There are also overviews of transport within a country, for example Latvia and Malaysia.
The second large group is about traveling by car. It includes routes around Oman and Sicily, the drive from Lisbon to Seville with stops along the way, and car rental in Barcelona with the documents, deposit and fines involved. Next to these are articles on staying connected: how to choose an eSIM for Oman and Japan. We write about flying from the practical side: open-jaw tickets, airport lounge access, non-refundable fares, compensation for a delayed flight, taking a pet on a plane.
The third group helps you choose when and where to go. It includes roundups of destinations for fall and winter, ideas for Easter and New Year, and an overview of music festivals. Seasonal guides belong here too: the Dominican Republic month by month, April in the Austrian mountains, Bora Bora. There are ready-made itineraries for several days: Amsterdam, Lisbon, Guimarães and Braga, a trip from Yerevan to the Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery. We also write about money and preparation: the budget for a trip to Georgia, a first trip to China and to New York, a packing list for the beach, gifts from France.
Every article opens with a short answer to the main question. Then come the practical blocks: options, cost, travel time, where to buy a ticket, what to watch out for. Each figure comes with its source and the date it was checked. Prices and timetables change, so we check them against the official sites of carriers, airports and museums. We are direct about the downsides: where a taxi gets expensive, where a connection is awkward, which season is better avoided.
The section suits people who travel independently and want to solve a specific problem before they fly. It is also useful on the road, when you need to compare a train with a bus quickly. If you are buying a package with a transfer included, you will not need most of these articles. If you are looking for a general description of a country or a city, this is not the best place to start. You will not find inspirational essays without practical detail here either.
Start with the question that is keeping you from moving forward. If your dates are not set yet, read a seasonal guide or a month-by-month roundup first. Once the dates are known, move on to the route from the airport and the journeys between cities. Connectivity, car rental and the packing list can comfortably wait until the last week. The articles on insurance and passenger rights are worth reading early: they explain what to check in the contract and with official sources.
The section is part of "Trip planning". Alongside it are "Traveling", with destination guides, and "Flights", with articles about air travel. For document requirements go to "Visas and passports", and always check the final rules on consulate websites. We follow changes that affect travel in the "Tourism news" section.
We update articles when fares, timetables or rules change. The date of the last check is given in the text, so look at it first. If a figure seems out of date, check it against the source we have named. The section keeps growing with new destinations and new practical questions. Open the article that matches your problem and write down what needs to be done before you fly.
