Christmas market in Basel: two squares, 150 chalets and a climb up the cathedral tower
The Basel Christmas market runs for four weeks a year. In the 2026 season it is open from November 26 through December 23 (as of 09/2026, official market page). Two squares, about 150 wooden chalets, and lights on the facades of the old town.
Basel took first place in the "Best Christmas Market in Europe" competition in 2021: the city became the first Swiss destination on the winners' list (according to the platform European Best Destinations). You can cover both squares in one evening, and climb the cathedral tower the same day.

What to know about the market
💡 In short:
- The market is open from November 26 through December 23, 2026, daily from 11:00 to 20:30.
- There are two locations: Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, less than a kilometer apart.
- On December 23 everything closes earlier: Barfüsserplatz at 20:00, Münsterplatz at 18:00.
- Prices and opening hours: 09/2026, verified on the Basel tourism office page.
The two squares have different characters. Barfüsserplatz is lively, with stalls selling crafts and food, while Münsterplatz is quieter and centered on the view of the cathedral. Between them lies Freie Strasse, the main shopping street of the old town: the walk takes 8-10 minutes at a relaxed pace (according to the map).
There are about 150 chalets across both squares, and one evening is enough to see both markets (according to a local market guide). They sell ceramics, Christmas tree ornaments, handmade jewelry, and local sweets.
How to get to the market
The easiest way to arrive is by train. Basel SBB station is a kilometer from Barfüsserplatz, and you can walk to the stalls in 12-15 minutes (according to the map). Trams run from the station to the square, but during Advent they are packed in the evenings, so walking is often faster.
If you are in Basel for the first time, look for volunteers at the station. In December they are usually there: they help visitors get oriented and point the way to the nearest market square.
Do not drive into the old town. There are almost no parking spaces inside, and the center is gridlocked in December. Leave your car in a parking garage near the station or at the Messe Basel exhibition complex, then walk or take a tram.
Check train schedules in advance on sbb.ch: during Advent trains run frequently, but it is better to buy your ticket before traveling.
Münsterplatz: the market by the cathedral walls
Münsterplatz is the most atmospheric part of the market. The stalls stand around Basel Minster (Basler Münster), the air smells of mulled wine and roasted almonds, and above the chalet roofs you can see the red sandstone and the two towers of the church.

The square follows the same hours as the rest of the market, and on December 23 it closes at 18:00 (as of 09/2026, market opening hours). This is also where Märchenwald, the children's section of the market, is located. More on that below.
Basel Minster viewing tower
You can climb the cathedral. The Georgsturm tower, 67.3 meters high, and the Martinsturm, 65.5 meters high, are open during cathedral hours. Each one is reached by about 250 steps of a narrow spiral staircase, and from the top you can see all of Basel, the Rhine, and neighboring France and Germany (as of 09/2026, official cathedral page).

Climbing is allowed only in groups of at least two people, no more than 30 guests are at the top at one time, and entry closes 30 minutes before the cathedral closes. From 12:00 to 12:20 the staircases are unavailable: midday prayer takes place in the cathedral.
During Advent the towers are also open in the evening. From December 1 to 23 on weekdays, climbing is open from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with entry until 5:30 PM: the Martinsturm stair tower is lit up, and you look down at the city while the shop windows glow below (as of 09/2026, evening climb schedule). Keep in mind that on weekends during Advent the cathedral is sometimes closed: check the schedule on the parish website before your visit.
Märchenwald: a market for children
Märchenwald is a children's area on Münsterplatz. Here kids pull candles from wax, bake cookies, forge in a small smithy, and make wooden crafts. Adults nearby also have things to do: stalls with cocoa and waffles are set up right there.
The children's area runs until December 22: on weekdays from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM, on weekends from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM (as of 12/2025, Märchenwald hours). The market itself stays open longer, until December 23, so the last day takes place without Märchenwald. Check the same page for the new season's hours.
Address: Münsterplatz, 4001 Basel. With children, it is easier to arrive at opening time, so you will have time for all the workshops.
Barfüsserplatz: crafts and street food
Barfüsserplatz is the main and busiest part of the market. Here you will find dozens of stalls with gifts, ceramics, Christmas ornaments, and handmade decorations.

Be sure to try Flammkuchen straight from the oven, and with tea have some Weihnachtsgutzeli or Basler Läckerli, a local cookie with spices and nuts (for more on market sweets, see this guide to Basel sweets).
The square operates during all market hours, and on December 23 it closes at 20:00 (as of 09/2026, Basel Tourism office). Getting away from here is easy: tram stops are right at the square.
What to see near the market
If you have a free day, combine the market with a museum and the town hall.
Spielzeug Welten Museum is located at Steinenvorstadt 1, a 10-minute walk from Barfüsserplatz. It is a toy museum with old dolls, teddy bears, and dollhouse displays: admission is 7 CHF, reduced ticket 5 CHF (as of 09/2026, museenbasel.ch).
Basel Town Hall (Basler Rathaus) on Marktplatz is recognizable by its red facade with murals. The 16th-century building still serves as the seat of the cantonal government, and on Saturdays they offer a short 30-minute guided tour: you will see the parliament and government council chambers and hear about the city's political history (according to basel.com).
Basel has many museums, so for one evening pick just one. If you want to see the old town with a guide, book Basel tours on GetYourGuide.

How much does it cost to climb the Basel Minster tower?
An adult ticket costs 6 CHF, a reduced ticket 4 CHF, and children under 14 enter free (as of 09/2026, cathedral rates and hours). You can only go up in a group of at least two people, and there are about 250 steps to the top. During Advent on weekdays, the towers are also open in the evening, from 16:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30.
Is the market worth visiting with children?
Yes. Märchenwald operates on Münsterplatz: children pull candles from wax, bake cookies, and forge in a small smithy. The area is open until December 22, on weekdays from 13:30 to 19:00, on weekends from 11:00 to 19:00 (as of 12/2025, seasonal Märchenwald hours). A 10-minute walk away is the toy museum, which is a good fallback in the rain.
What should I try at the market?
For hot food, go for Flammkuchen from the oven and mulled wine; for sweets, Weihnachtsgutzeli and Basler Läckerli, the local spiced cookies (the market treats guide covers the market's sweets). Stalls are open until 20:30, and on December 23 Barfüsserplatz closes 30 minutes earlier.
How do I get to the market from Basel SBB station?
From the station to Barfüsserplatz is about a 15-minute walk (on the map): roughly a kilometer through the old town streets. You can also take a tram; the stop is right by the square. If it's your first time in Basel, volunteers are stationed near the station in December to point you in the right direction.
Is the market closed on December 24 and 25?
Yes, on December 23, 2026, the market closes until the following winter (as of 09/2026, 2026 market dates). On December 24 and 25, both squares are empty: the stalls have already been taken down by then. Museums and the cathedral operate on special schedules during the holidays, so check the hours in advance.
In short: what to book
One evening covers both squares: start at Barfüsserplatz, walk up Freie Strasse to Münsterplatz, and finish with the cathedral viewing tower.
With children, go first to Märchenwald on Münsterplatz, then to the tower.
If you arrive by train, book a hotel inside the old town: the market is a 15-minute walk away.
If you're going for an Advent weekend, look for a room early; hotels are busy in December.
