Portugal in November: weather, water and a Lisbon itinerary

November in Western Europe is no longer about the beach. Portugal remains the exception: daytime in Lisbon is around +18 °C, while the water along the southern coast stays around +19 °C (as of 09/2026, IPMA and NOAA observations for the Algarve).

You won't get summer sea temperatures, but you do get empty viewpoints, affordable hotel nights, and palaces with no lines. Below I break down the weather and water by region, list ticket prices and museum hours, highlight the main neighborhoods of Lisbon, and explain how to get from the airport.

The main argument for November is simple: the flow of visitors drops along with the water temperature. At Lisbon airport you get through security faster, and in Algarve hotels you pay the autumn rate instead of the July one.

The weather varies noticeably across the country. The north, around Porto, is more often wet and windy in November. The center and south, from Lisbon to the Algarve, rarely see rain, and the sun comes out almost every day.

Weather and water temperature in November

Lisbon: what to see on your first trip

Lisbon is built on hills at the mouth of the Tagus River. The city is divided into old and new parts, and both are worth seeing on your first trip.

The old town begins with the Alfama, Baixa, and Chiado districts. You walk along narrow sloping streets, climb up to St. George's Castle, and look down at the tiled rooftops. The old tram runs through the most residential neighborhoods, but at rush hour the car gets packed with crowds.

Two long bridges span the Tagus, and a train runs across one of them. The bridges take you to the south bank of the river, to Almada.

The new part grew up on the site of the Expo 98 exhibition. This is the Parque das Nações district with modern architecture, large shopping centers, and nightlife. It is easy to get there by metro, and you can spend the evening here if you are tired of the hills.

Museums: what to choose

Lisbon's museums are closed on Mondays, so plan your culture for Tuesday and later.

The city's most unusual museum, Museu Nacional dos Coches, is dedicated to carriages. A ticket costs €15 (as of 09/2026, museum's official website), and the carriage collection itself is considered the largest in the world. The city also has museums of archaeology and ethnology, so museums alone will take you a couple of days.

Jerónimos and Belém: tickets and hours

The Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's return from India. The navigator himself is buried in its church, and the entire complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wineries and tastings in autumn

Wine is made throughout Portugal, and autumn is the best time for tastings. Grapes are harvested in September and October, by November the must is already fermenting, and the cellars are open to visitors.

The main wine region lies in the north, in the Douro Valley. Vineyard terraces slope down to the river, and in Vila Nova de Gaia, across from Porto, the old port wine cellars stand. There you taste fortified wines and see how they are aged in oak barrels.

Further south, dry wines are made. Around Setúbal, Muscat grapes grow, and on Madeira they make fortified wine using a special method. A wine tour usually takes half a day and includes a tasting of several glasses.

How to get from the airport to the city

Humberto Delgado Airport lies almost in the center of Lisbon. You can get there by metro, taxi, or a pre-booked transfer.

The metro is the cheapest option. The red line takes you to the center in about 25 minutes, and a ticket costs less than €2 (as of 09/2026, Metro Lisboa). Trains run from early morning until late evening.
