Short May vacation: eight destinations for a 5-7 day trip
A short May getaway comes together fast. Warm water and cities in bloom rarely overlap in one place, so the destination decides everything.
We picked eight options for a five to seven day trip and broke each one down by season, visas, and logistics.

How to choose a May destination
💡 In short:
- For warm water, go with Egypt or the Maldives; for flowers and cities, the Netherlands or Hungary.
- Book your hotel and tickets early: May dates sell out faster than summer ones.
- Keukenhof dates and hours: 09/2026, verified on the official website
In May, all destinations fall into two groups. The first is warm seas, where you swim every day. The second is cities and flowers, where your time goes to walking around rather than the beach.
Entry rules depend on your citizenship, so check the requirements on official websites before buying tickets. Visa-free options are on the list, but not for everyone.
1. Turkey
© Antoloji · CC BY-SAPhoto: Antoloji, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsTurkey remains the easiest option for a first swim. In early May, the sea is only starting to warm up, so the water can feel cool. On the plus side, the sun already beats down during the day, so bring SPF.
If the water feels too cool, pick a hotel with a heated pool: Turkey has no shortage of those. For sightseeing, you can add Istanbul with its old quarters, coffee shops, and ferries across the Bosphorus. It's a separate city, and you need a flight from there to the resorts.

- Who it's for: if you want to combine beach and sightseeing in one trip.
- The catch: in early May, the sea is still cool, so swimming isn't comfortable for everyone.
2. Egypt

The air is already hot, and the sea is warm enough to be comfortable, so you can swim every day. May is also good for diving: underwater visibility is great, and the water temperature is pleasant.
The visa is issued on arrival, paid in cash in US dollars, valid for 30 days (as of 09/2026, official portal). For some resorts, it's not required at all, so check the rules for your passport.

3. Maldives

The water stays warm and clear, and the sun beats down. The catch this month is nighttime downpours, which leave the air feeling humid during the day.
Available activities include snorkeling, diving, swimming with rays, and surfing. Different islands offer glass-bottom boat trips or horseback rides along the sand.
No visa needed: you get one free for 30 days on arrival (as of 09/2026, Maldives Immigration). Fill out the online traveler declaration in advance.

- Who it's for: if you want to relax and are not up for a lot of walking.
- The catch: rain showers are possible at night, and daytime humidity is higher than in the dry season.
4. Netherlands
© Balou46 · CC BY-SAPhoto: Balou46, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe Netherlands runs its flower program in May. The main reason to go here is Keukenhof Park near Amsterdam: according to the official website, it is open from March 18 to May 9, 2027, daily from 8:00 to 19:00. Last entry is at 18:15, so book a morning slot. In May the park is only open until the 9th, so it is worth going in the first week of the month.
Amsterdam itself is easy to get around on foot and by bike, and you can take a boat ride along the canals. North of the capital is Zaanse Schans with working windmills, a cheese dairy, and a wooden clog workshop. If you want the sea, The Hague is also easy to reach.

5. Spain

Spain opens its resort season in May, but the water is still cold, so swimming is not comfortable for everyone. On the other hand, it is easy to sunbathe on a Barcelona beach without the July crowds.
Barcelona offers Gaudí architecture, a rich culture, and Spanish cuisine within a single city. If you want a change of scenery, there are ancient mountain monasteries near the city, and in Madrid you can catch a football match.

- The catch: the water is cold in May, swimming will only suit the hardy.
6. Italy

You could spend weeks exploring Rome, but on a short vacation it is realistic to see the highlights: the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and St. Peter's Square.
The resort season on Italian beaches also starts in May, although the sea remains cool. If you want to combine city and sea, take a few days in Rome and a trip out to the coast.
You need a Schengen visa to travel to Italy if you do not have EU citizenship.

7. Hungary

Budapest, with its architecture, the Danube, and its bridges, deserves its own trip. Széchenyi Baths are open year-round, and in May they're a pleasant alternative to the sea.
There's also plenty to see beyond the capital. You can cover several cities in a single trip.

8. Scandinavia
© Ximonic (Simo Räsänen) · CC BY-SAPhoto: Ximonic (Simo Räsänen), CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsScandinavia works well if you want to see several countries in one trip. By May it's already sunny and comfortable here, and spring brings blooming cherry blossoms in Stockholm and Oslo.
The most practical option here is a capitals cruise that includes the fjords. You sleep in a cabin, and in the evenings the ship offers live music and shows. In the morning you can watch the sunrise over the sea.
A cruise saves both time and money: instead of traveling between capitals, you pay once. Doing it separately would cost more.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Warm water in May is waiting in Egypt and the Maldives: you can swim there from day one. In Turkey the sea is still warming up, so swimming isn't comfortable for everyone. For Spain and Italy, May is more about sunbathing and walking around than swimming.
What about visas for these destinations?
In Egypt, a visa is issued on arrival for cash in dollars; in the Maldives, it's free for 30 days. The Netherlands, Spain, and Italy require a Schengen visa unless you have EU citizenship. Check the rules for your passport well in advance.

In May the park is open only at the very beginning of the month. Exact dates and hours are listed in the Netherlands section. You can still catch the tulips blooming if you book a slot for the first week of May.
Which option should you choose if it's your first time traveling in May?
For a first trip, go with Turkey: it's easy to put together an itinerary with a beach. Istanbul can be added separately, and you'll need a flight there from the resort. If you specifically want warm water, choose Egypt. For a relaxed trip without moving around, the Maldives is a good fit.
What should you do if the weather turns bad in May?
May is unpredictable almost everywhere, so keep a backup option in your plan. In the Netherlands you can wait out the rain in a museum; in Hungary you can warm up in a thermal bath. At resorts in Egypt and the Maldives the weather is usually more stable.
