Which sea to choose in 2026: season, water and prices of coastlines

People choose a vacation sea by the weather, not by the name. Warm water in February, a short season, flight prices and the trip to the beach matter more than a picture from an ad. Six popular coastlines behave differently, and there is no single right answer.

The Mediterranean has more countries than any other shore on this list, while the Sea of Azov resorts are currently closed. Below we break down each coastline so you can pick the shore that fits your month and budget.

How to choose a sea for your vacation

💡 In short:

  • Compare coastlines by three things: travel month, water temperature and travel cost.
  • For swimming with kids, a gentle slope into the water and low salinity matter more than a resort's rating.
  • Warm water in winter is only found in the Red Sea; the Mediterranean and Aegean close their season in October.
  • Season and water temperature: 09/2026, verified on the official website of the Egyptian tourism office.

A beach vacation depends on the season more than on the country. The same sea in June and in September gives you different water, wind and prices. So first you pick the month, and only then the shore and the hotel.

The second criterion matters more than the first: look at water temperature, not air temperature. Warm air with cold water won't let you swim, and vice versa. The third criterion is about the journey, because a short flight often matters more than an extra two degrees.

Black Sea: mild climate and low salinity

The Black Sea is chosen by those who go for a week and want an easy trip. The Bulgarian coast stretches for 378 km and has 209 beaches, and in July and August the water stays at 24-26 °C (as of 09/2026, Bulgaria Travel portal). Salinity here is roughly half that of the ocean, so the water hardly stings your eyes. There are no creatures dangerous to humans in the Black Sea: you don't need to worry about sharks or venomous jellyfish.

Resorts to choose from: Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria, Constanța and Mamaia in Romania, Batumi in Georgia.

For a first vacation, two weeks in Sunny Beach will be enough, because the infrastructure is close by and prices are lower than in the Mediterranean.

  • Who it's for: families with kids and those going to the sea for the first time.
  • When to go: June-September, the best water in July and August.
  • The catch: the season is short, in late September the water cools down and some bars close.

Sea of Azov: the shallowest of the six

The Sea of Azov is shallower than the others on this list and warms up faster than all of them. Its water is lightly salty, and the shore holds heat for a long time. Before the war this was a budget family destination: Berdiansk and Mariupol drew vacationers with kids from across the country.

Currently the resorts on the Ukrainian coast are closed, and travel to Ukraine is not possible (as of 09/2026, Auswärtiges Amt). If you were planning this shore, put your plans on hold until better times and choose another sea.

  • The catch: the war in Ukraine, resorts on the coast are unavailable.

Mediterranean Sea: a long season and many countries

The Mediterranean offers a wide choice of countries. Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Malta all sit on the same shore. The swimming season runs from May to October, and in August the water at Spanish and Italian resorts warms up to 26-27 °C, so you can swim here for almost half the year (as of 09/2026, official tourism portal of Spain).

Beaches are easy to match to your taste: Costa Brava and Mallorca in Spain, the Amalfi Coast and the Italian Riviera in Italy, Antalya in Turkey, Cyprus. The Colosseum, the Acropolis and the Sagrada Família are nearby, so a beach day pairs well with sightseeing.

You get a long season, developed infrastructure and a flight from any major European city. If a wide choice of hotels and regions matters to you, look first at the Mediterranean.

  • Who it's for: almost everyone, especially those who want to choose their hotel and region.
  • When to go: May-June and September-October without the heat, July and August are the hottest.
  • The catch: in August the popular beaches are crowded, and accommodation costs more than at any other time of year.

Dead Sea: wellness instead of swimming

The Dead Sea is mistakenly called a sea. Under that name lies a salt lake at the lowest point on land (as of 09/2026, Visit Jordan). Salt concentration reaches 34%, so drowning in this water is nearly impossible, but swimming won't work either: your body is immediately pushed to the surface (as of 09/2026, deadsea.com).

The water stings your eyes and any cuts, so you can't stay in it for long. The main benefits come from the mud and mineral water, which is why spa hotels have been built on both the Israeli and Jordanian shores. If you're looking for wellness rather than a beach, this destination is worth considering.

  • Who it's for: those traveling for mud and mineral water treatments.
  • When to go: March-May and September-November, in summer the shore is too hot.
  • The catch: you swim in short dips, you can't last long in the salty water.
  • Hotels: Dead Sea hotels on Trip.com.

Red Sea: warmth and diving year-round

The Red Sea suits those who don't want to wait for summer. Water stays in the 22-28 °C range year-round, so you can swim and dive here even in January, when it's raining in Europe (as of 09/2026, Experience Egypt). The Egyptian resorts of Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Marsa Alam sit on coral reefs, which is why divers come here.

Israel's Eilat and Jordan's Aqaba offer the same climate with a different set of excursions.

  • Who it's for: divers and those who want warmth in winter.
  • When to go: year-round, most comfortable from October to April.
  • The catch: sharks and barracudas live in the sea, swim only in designated areas near hotels.
  • Hotels: hotels in Hurghada on Trip.com.

Aegean Sea: islands, history, and wind

The Aegean Sea is chosen for its islands and history. Greek Crete, Rhodes and Santorini and Turkish Bodrum and Kusadasi sit on the same coastline, and the water warms up to 22-26 °C in summer (as of 09/2026, Visit Greece). The Acropolis, Delphi and the old town of Rhodes are nearby, so a beach day easily combines with a sightseeing trip.

It's quieter here than on the Mediterranean: uncrowded bays, pebble beaches and calm evenings. In summer the meltemi blows from the north, so open beaches get waves. If you like a peaceful vacation without crowds, come in May, June or September.

  • Who it's for: those who want to combine beach and ancient sites without crowds.
  • When to go: May-June and September-October; July and August are windy.
  • The catch: the meltemi wind in July and August kicks up high waves.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Where can you swim in a warm sea in winter?

In winter, warm water remains only in the Red Sea. In Egypt it stays around 22 °C and above, so you can swim there in any month (as of 09/2026, Egypt tourism office website). The Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea cool down in winter. For swimming in February, choose Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.

Which sea is best for a vacation with a child?

For a first trip with a child, the Black Sea works well. It has a gentle slope into the water, low salinity and no dangerous animals. The Bulgarian resorts of Golden Sands and Sunny Beach are designed for families. The Mediterranean also works, but in July and August it is hotter there.

Why can't you swim in the Dead Sea?

The water is very salty, so its density is high (as of 09/2026, Dead Sea). Your body is pushed to the surface, paddling and diving are awkward, and the water stings your eyes. People bathe here in short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes, and the main benefit comes from the mud.

Where is it cheaper to vacation?

The Bulgarian Black Sea coast usually works out cheaper: accommodation and food cost less than in Spain or Italy. Turkey and Egypt stay in the mid-range and often include the flight in the package. The Mediterranean and Aegean are more expensive, especially in peak season.

Are sharks dangerous in the Red Sea?

Yes, the Red Sea is home to sharks and barracudas. Dangerous encounters are rare, but the rules are simple: swim in the roped-off area near your hotel, do not go beyond the buoys and do not feed the fish.

In short: what to book

If you have children under ten, choose the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. If you want to swim in January, choose Hurghada on the Red Sea. If you want islands and ancient sites, choose Crete or Rhodes on the Aegean. If you are going to improve your health, choose the Dead Sea shore in Israel or Jordan. Choose the Mediterranean when a wide choice of countries and a short flight matter.
