Best time to travel to China: monthly weather and visa 2026

Best time to travel to China: monthly weather and visa 2026

China can be covered in two weeks, but a month on the road solves almost everything. In the north, winters bring frost. In the south, summers bring heat and downpours, so one piece of advice for the whole country does not work.

The country stretches from taiga to subtropics, and there is no single "best season." The best time for a trip to China falls in spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October): warm, dry, and fewer tourists in almost all regions, according to China Highlights. Below you will find a regional breakdown, a climate table for Beijing, and a recommendation that takes 2026 visa rules into account.

When to go to China

💡 In short:

  • Spring (April, May) and autumn (September, October): warm and dry across almost the entire country.
  • Beijing and the north: the best months are May and September. Winters are frosty, summers are rainy.
  • The south (Guangzhou, Hong Kong): avoid the humid summer, plan your trip from October to December.
  • Peak rainfall in Beijing falls in July and August: 176 and 182 mm per month.
  • Visa: citizens of Germany and EU countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, valid until 31.12.2026.
  • Climate data: long-term averages, verified 09/2026 against climate-data.org.

The choice of month depends on where you are going. In Beijing and at the Great Wall, the climate is northern, while the tropical south is a different story. Below we break down the climate by region and by specific figures.

China's climate: three different worlds

China spans almost five time zones, and the weather changes sharply. In the north (Beijing, Harbin), the climate is continental monsoon: cold, dry winters and hot, rainy summers. The east and center (Shanghai, Xi'an) are milder, but summers are humid and muggy.

The south (Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Guilin) extends into subtropics and tropics: warm almost year-round, but summer brings typhoons and downpours. The western highlands (Tibet, Yunnan) stand apart: sunny during the day, cold at night, and many mountain passes are closed in winter.

That is why spring and autumn are most often called the universal window, according to a China Highlights overview. If you are planning to visit several regions, these months will give you the fewest weather surprises.

Beijing temperatures by month

Beijing shows the northern climate in its purest form. The average annual temperature is about 12 °C, but the range is enormous. The hottest month, July: around 31 °C during the day. The coldest, January: at night it drops to about -9 °C, verified 09/2026 against the climate-data.org database.

Average monthly temperature ranges from -4 to 26 °C. Seasons are clearly defined, with almost no transitional periods. For warmth, the months from May to September work well: the average temperature stays at or above 19 °C.

In January, February, and December, however, the average drops below 3 °C. If you do not handle frost and dry wind well, these months are best avoided for Beijing. Dress in layers: during the day in the sun it feels warmer than the thermometer shows.

Precipitation and the rainy season

To choose a month, look not only at warmth but also at rain. Beijing receives about 578 mm of precipitation per year over 46 rainy days, according to climate-data.org data. Most moisture comes in summer.

July and August hold the peak: these two months effectively make up the local rainy season. About 80% of the annual total falls from June to September, according to climate-data.org measurements.

Rain is not a reason to cancel a trip. Downpours are often short and intense, with sun in between. But build slack into your schedule: bring an umbrella, a light waterproof jacket, and do not plan long walks in open areas during the rainy peak.

Best time to travel: recommendation

Our recommendation is based on three conditions: precipitation below 175 mm per month, average temperature between 19 and 28 °C, and at least 7 hours of sunshine per day. For Beijing, May and September best meet these criteria. June formally also passes all three conditions. But June already has 71 mm of precipitation, more than May and September, and daytime temperatures are hotter, around 30 °C. April and October come next.

But China does not end with the capital. Below you will find a guide to the main regions so you can quickly identify your window.

Visa and entry to China in 2026

Weather accounts for only half of the planning. The other half depends on paperwork, and here the news is good. Citizens of Germany and almost all EU countries can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, with the policy extended until December 31, 2026, according to TravelChinaGuide.

The rule applies to tourism, business, family visits, and transit. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 more months, and you must confirm that you will leave the country within 30 days.

As of 09/2026, the exceptions remain the Czech Republic and Lithuania: their citizens still need a visa. Check the exact conditions before departure on the Chinese embassy website, as visa rules change.

In short: when to go to China

There is no single best month for the whole country, so choose by region. For the north and Beijing, the best times are May and September; for the east, May and October. In the south, late autumn is the most comfortable. Avoid summer with its heat and downpours whenever possible.

  • If your vacation is in spring: choose April or May for the best balance of warmth and dry weather.
  • If you want a warm autumn: September and October for Beijing, Shanghai, and the Great Wall.
  • If you are heading south: plan your trip from October to December.
  • If your schedule is flexible: avoid July and August, the peak months for rain and heat in the north.

Check your chosen month against the table above and leave slack in your schedule for rain. Verify visa rules before departure.
