Fall colors USA 2026: peak calendar by region

Autumn colors in the US don't last long. Get the dates wrong by two weeks, and instead of orange maples you'll see a brown forest.

The good news: peak dates are known in advance. The 2026 season stretches for almost a month, from September 29 in the north of the country to October 27 in California. The forecast is built on historical data and NOAA reports, and the map itself is updated every year before fall begins.

Below you'll find which regions will deliver the best color, when the peak arrives, and where to go for foliage. We checked dates and prices on September 12, 2026 on official websites; links are next to each figure.

Which regions will deliver the best color in 2026

💡 In short:

  • North and high elevations: peak during the week of September 29.
  • New England and upstate New York: October 6-13.
  • Late season: California wine country in late October.
  • Peak dates: 09/2026, according to the interactive forecast map.

The brightest season is expected in New England and upstate New York. That's the forecast from AccuWeather: spring and summer were wet, and fall weather is turning drier. A dry, cool September usually stretches the color over several weeks.

The Midwest will also get vivid foliage, though later than New England. In California, you'll find color in the Sierra Nevada mountains and in the wine counties north of San Francisco.

When foliage reaches its peak

Dates depend on latitude and elevation. The farther north and higher the forest grows, the earlier it turns yellow.

By September 29, according to the forecast map, the peak covers Washington, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

By October 6, color reaches the rest of Michigan, New York state, and Connecticut. All of New England shows its best shades at the same time: Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. In California, Arizona, and New Mexico, the first bright patches appear in early October.

By October 20, much of it is already over. In the main "maple" states, foliage turns brown and drops. Build in a time buffer: weather shifts dates by several days in either direction.

Where to go for fall foliage

Four destinations cover almost the entire season. The East is convenient for a short trip, the Appalachians offer the longest views, and California extends the season through late October.

Hudson river valley and the Catskills

Peak here is expected around October 13, about a week later than New England (according to the SmokyMountains.com forecast map). If your vacation falls in mid-October, the eastern US will still show color: New England is already fading, while the Catskills are just entering the season.

Lodging in these mountains gets booked up early, so reserve before you travel. In the Catskills, the most frequently mentioned is Eastwind Oliverea Valley, and in the Hudson River Valley, Wildflower Farms from the Auberge Resort Collection. Both hotels are positioned so you look at the foliage right from your room.

The catch with this option is just one: in mid-October, New York City residents come here too. Arrive on a weekday, and the overlooks will be less crowded.

New England: Williamstown and the Mountaineer train

New England hits its peak by October 6, but you don't have to go to Vermont. Massachusetts has Williamstown with its university museum and arts scene.

For photos, take the Mountaineer train run by the Conway Scenic Railroad from North Conway in New Hampshire. It's a four-hour trip through Crawford Notch and about 90 kilometers round trip.

An adult ticket in high season starts at $83 in Coach class (as of September 12, 2026, carrier's official website). Comfort Class runs $130, and the domed Observation Dome car is $198. Children ages 4-12 get a lower fare, and food is not included in the price.

Blue ridge parkway and Asheville

In western North Carolina, the window is wider: October 13 and 20 (according to the SmokyMountains.com forecast map). The Blue Ridge Parkway offers the longest views of the Appalachians. It runs nearly 470 miles (according to the National Park Service), and driving it is free.

For lodging, choose Asheville: it's a convenient base for getting onto the parkway. The city's restaurants have been racking up James Beard nominations in recent years, so book a dinner table in advance. Among Asheville hotels, people often mention Blind Tiger Asheville and Grand Bohemian.

On October weekends, the parkway has more cars than on weekdays. Head out early in the morning, and you'll reach the overlooks before the main rush.

Sonoma County wine country

Expect the latest peak of the season in California. In Sonoma County, the vines reach full color around October 27, which coincides with the end of the harvest (according to the SmokyMountains.com forecast map).

Wineries and hotels hold tastings and dinners during these weeks. For Healdsburg, people name Appellation Healdsburg, Montage Healdsburg, and The Madrona: all have vineyard views and an on-site restaurant.

Plan this trip later than a New England trip. While foliage is dropping in the East, Sonoma is just coming into color, and you get a second chance within the season.

How not to miss the dates

A forecast is a probability, not a schedule. Before you travel, check three things.

  • Elevation: in the mountains, color arrives earlier than in a valley at the same latitude.
  • Map freshness: check it a few days before you fly; data is updated weekly.
  • Cancellable booking: choose a rate with free cancellation if you're traveling several weeks out.

One more tip: don't stake your whole trip on a single week. If you're heading to the mountains for foliage, add a day for travel between two areas.
